Circadian rhythms in physiology and behavior are modulated by external factors such as light or temperature. We studied whether self-selected office lighting during the habitual waking period had a different impact on alertness, cognitive performance and h ...

Improving the energy efficiency and sustainability in the urban sector plays a vital role in the energy transition. Hence, it is important to consider promising ways to design sustainable urban energy hubs linking neighborhoods into energy systems. Improving the efficiency and sustainability of urban energy infrastructure is a process with multiple steps. This chapter presents the workflow that is required to be followed in this process. A brief overview about the methods that can be used to consider urban

While the effects of street-canyon configuration on temperature, wind speed and direction, and air quality have received much attention, its impact on solar energy potential has not been much studied. This paper focuses on two aspects of the street-canyon ...

High dynamic range imaging has been shown to be a reliable tool to assess luminance maps and glare risk probability in buildings. However, there are some limitations of image capturing time, especially when dealing with highly dynamic and contrasted daylig ...

The parameters of thermal evaporation and magnetron sputtering deposition were optimized for fabrication of vanadium dioxide thin films. The O2 partial pressure during film deposition is critical for obtaining a pure VO2 phase. Thermochromic V1−xWxO2 (x = ...

Anidolic Daylighting Systems (ADS) typically reduce the daylight flux reaching an office room‟s window section and increase it in the rear of the room. They offer interesting possibilities for the combination of comfortable daylighting and highly energy-ef ...

The integration of renewable energy technologies and building renovation are the two main procedures for improving energy sustainability of buildings at neighborhood scale. It is difficult, however, to optimize these procedures simultaneously. This study f ...

This study focuses on developing a BIPV pre-design computational platform combining visual impact assessment, building simulation and energy system optimization. The outdoor exposed surface of a pavilion court building block is evaluated through a physiolo ...

Distributed energy systems play a significant role in the integration of renewable energy technologies. The Energy Internet links a fleet of distributed energy systems to each other and with the grid. Interactions between the distributed energy systems via ...

During the study presented in this article, we compared two highly energy-efficient lighting scenarios for evening office lighting (i.e. electric lighting that is typically used for approxiamately 2 h in the evening). The first of these lighting scenarios ...

Light induces important “Non-Image-Forming” (NIF) effects on human physiology and behavior, such as improvement of alertness, cognitive performance and mood. Considering these effects in office lighting can improve well-being and productivity of the occupa ...

Renewable energy integration into energy systems have been widely discussed in recent literature. Stand-alone micro-grids can play a vital role in this context. However, design optimization of such hybrid energy systems is a challenging task. Most of the r ...

A meteorological tower was installed on the EPFL campus in a semi-urban environment for the high frequency monitoring of the micro-climate. This project was done in the larger framework of the measurement of the meteorological profiles and also a quantific ...

Electric lighting is responsible of about one fifth of the electricity demand of buildings in Switzerland. Therein, integrated control of sun shadings and artificial lighting can mitigate the electricity demand while maintaining the user comfort and perfor ...

Simplified correlation methods are powerful tools to compare both the energy performance of buildings and the efficiency of different HVAC control systems. For buildings in which both heating and cooling loads contribute to the energy consumption, widely used methods, like the energy signature models, are not appropriate, since they cannot simultaneously handle both heating and cooling aspects. This paper proposes a new correlation method to overcome this difficulty. The ‘Eta method’ deals with internal gai

Bi-directional Transmission (or Reflection) Distribution Functions, commonly named BTDFs (and BRDFs), are essential quantities to describe any complex fenestration system in details. They are defined as the ratio of the luminance diffused from a surface element in a given direction (after transmission or reflection), and the illuminance incident on the sample. However, these functions are capable of describing the regular (specular) as well as the diffuse components of emerging light, and their mutual knowl

The “Green Lighting” research project, initiated at the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory (LESO-PB) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), is aiming at an energy efficient integration of advanced daylighting and electri ...

Cold formed steel-framed constructions have been strongly disseminated with particular emphasis on the residential sector due to their fast execution, quality control and final cost. However, this construction typology presents a weakness associated with a ...

Objective: We tested whether the effects of a dynamic lighting system are superior to conventional lighting on emotions, agitation behaviour, quality of life, melatonin secretion and circadian restactivity cycles in severely demented patients. As a compari ...

We propose a methodology combining physical modelling and machine learning (ML) to estimate the apparent ground thermal diffusivity at the scale of a country. Based on ground temperature time series at different depths, we estimate the diffusivity at 49 Sw ...
