A new methodology is proposed to couple a meteorological model with a building energy use model. The aim of such a coupling is to improve the boundary conditions of both models with no significant increase in computational time. In the present case, the Ca ...

The integrated performance assessment of buildings can orient their design in the early stages. Despite the wide availability of physics simulation-based, data-driven, and hybrid techniques it is often difficult to rely on a single, appropriate technique t ...

In this work, the potential of magnetron sputtered magnesium fluoride (MgF2) and MgF2 containing composite coatings for coloured solar collector glazing is investigated. Coloured thin-film interference coatings on the reverse side of the collector cover glass give solar collectors an aesthetic appearance, which facilitates their integration into the building’s envelope. Hereby, integration means that the solar collector is no longer recognisable as technical device. Moreover, its appearance is the one of an

The consumption of resources within an urban neighbourhood depends on the behaviour of its occupants. To understand the randomness of this behaviour and its effect on the demand of resources calls for the development of a set of stochastic models which are ...

Rooftop-mounted solar photovoltaics have shown to be a promising technology to provide clean electricity in urban areas. Several large-scale studies have thus been conducted in different countries and cities worldwide to estimate their PV potential for the existing building stock using different methods. These methods, however, are time-consuming and computationally expensive. This paper provides a Machine Learning approach to estimate the annual solar irradiation on building roofs (in kWh/m2) for large are

Physical models are commonly used to assess daylighting performance of buildings using sky simulators for purpose of research as well as practice. Recent studies have pointed out the general tendency of scale model assessments to overestimate the performance, usually expressed through work plane illuminance and daylight factor profiles, when compared to the real buildings. The cause of the discrepancy between buildings and scale models is due to several sources of experimental errors, such as modelling of b

Households represent a large share of flexibility on the demand side for assisting the smooth operation of the highly renewable grid. The stochastic nature of activities and various appliance usage patterns of household occupants affects the flexibility po ...

The large-scale deployment of photovoltaics (PV) on building rooftops can play a significant role in the transition to a low-carbon energy system. To date, the lack of high-resolution building and environmental data and the large uncertainties related to e ...

Buildings account for almost 40% of energy consumption in European countries and hence are responsible for a significant part of greenhouse gas emissions. Recent regulations and standards (Minergie, Minergie P, etc.) are strongly encouraging more sustainable buildings by decreasing energy consumption and integrating more renewable energy sources. It is essential, in such a context, to evaluate the performance of buildings and to determine how relevant are the integration of renewable energies and how their

This work takes benefit from two advanced building technologies through the integration of an anidolic daylighting system and an electro-chromic glazing in a building facade for achieving an optimal control of the daylight flux entering in an office room. ...

The current climate change is calling for a drastic reduction of energy demand as well as of greenhouse gases. Besides this, cities also need to adapt to face the challenges related to climate change. Cities, with their complex urban texture and fabric, ca ...

Solar energy deployment through PV installations in urban areas depends strongly on the shape, size, and orientation of available roofs. Here we use a machine learning approach, Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification, to classify 10,085 building roofs ...

Urban greening has great ecological, social and economic benefits for the built environment. It also has significant impacts on the microclimate and urban energy balance. In this study, we quantify the impacts of urban greening on the ground surface temper ...

Recent studies have pointed out the general tendency of scale models to overestimate the daylighting performance of buildings, usually expressed through work plane illuminance and daylight factor distribution profiles. An analysis of the corresponding sour ...

Climate induced extreme weather events and weather variations will affect both the demand of energy and the resilience of energy supply systems. The specific potential impact of extreme events on energy systems has been difficult to quantify due to the unp ...

Lighting conditions in workplaces contribute to a variety of factors related to work satisfaction, productivity and well-being. We tested whether different photometric variables also influence visual perception and the comfort of the lighting, as well as s ...

Personalized shading control is critical for optimizing occupant visual comfort and building energy efficiency, yet conventional systems rely on static and generalized settings. This study proposes a machine learning (ML) framework that infers individual visual discomfort thresholds from occupants’ real-time interactions with smart blinds. A comparative evaluation of multiple models, including random forest (RF) and long short-term memory (LSTM), found that the convolutional neural networks (CNN) were most

How green or environmentally friendly urban areas are in comparison with rural areas is a topic that has received much attention in recent years. This is understandable because urban areas already emit around 70% of the global greenhouse gases. This percen ...

Multi layered chrome-free black selective surfaces for solar thermal energy conversion were produced by a low-cost sol gel dip-coating method. The optical properties of the Cu-Co-Mn-Si-O based nanocrystalline thin films have been characterized by spectroph ...

An accurate evaluation of daylight distribution through advanced fenestration systems (complex glazing, solar shading systems) requires the knowledge of their Bi-directional light Transmission Distribution Function (BTDF). An innovative equipment for the experimental assessment of these bi-directional functions has been developed, based on a digital imaging detection system. An extensive set of BTDF measurements was performed with this photogoniometer on venetian blinds presenting curved slats with a mirror
