Important ingredients of the advanced-tokamak route to fusion have been explored in depth in the Tokamak a Configuration Variable [F. Hofmann, J. B. Lister, M. Anton , Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 36, B277 (1994)] over the past two years. Using a uniquel ...

The fully non-inductive sustainment of high normalized beta plasmas (beta(N)) is a crucial challenge for the steady-state operation of a tokamak reactor. In order to assess the difficulties facing such scenarios, steady-state regimes have been explored on ...

The effect of ELMS on the vertical position observer in TCV has been investigated and a new, optimized, observer which minimizes the influence of ELMS has been constructed. The new observer has been tested in TCV, under closed loop conditions, and it is shown to be considerably less sensitive to ELMS than the classical observer. In order to determine whether this method could also be used in JET, ELMy H mode discharges and vertical displacement events in JET are analysed and a modified vertical position obs

On the basis of several recent breakthroughs in fusion research, many activities have been launched around the world to develop fusion power plants on the fastest possible time scale. In this context, high-fidelity simulations of the plasma behavior on lar ...

Internal kinks are a common magneto hydro-dynamic (MHD) instability observed in tokamak operation when the q profile in the plasma core is close to unity. This MHD instability impacts both the transport of the bulk plasma (current, particle and energy tran ...

Experiments using ion cyclotron current drive (ICCD) to control sawteeth are presented. In particular, discharges demonstrating shortening of fast ion induced long sawteeth reported in (Eriksson et al 2004 Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 235004) by ICCD have been anal ...

DT operations at JET gave a unique and invaluable opportunity to design, develop and test real -time controllers that will be applied in future burning plasma devices, as ITER and SPARC. Among them, the dud detector [L. Piron et al. 2019 Fusion Eng. Design ...

Electron cyclotron heating (ECH) is widely used in magnetic fusion devices, and the polarization of the injected millimeter-wave beams plays a crucial role in the propagation and absorption of the beam energy by the plasma. This polarization can be adjuste ...

Key plasma physics and real-time control elements needed for robustly stable operation of high fusion power discharges in ITER have been demonstrated in recent research worldwide. Recent analysis has identified the current density profile as the main drive ...

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium states with imposed axisymmetric boundary are computed in which a spontaneous bifurcation develops to produce an internal three-dimensional (3D) configuration with a helical structure in addition to the standard axisym ...

Total bootstrap current calculations with the updated VENUS+δf code that incorporates energy convolution and the momentum correction technique have been performed for the reference tokamak JT-60U cases and for the experimental Large Helical Device (LH ...

A tritium imaging plate technique (TIPT) in combination with an electron-probe microscopic analysis (EPMA) were applied to examine tritium (T) retention characteristics in individual dust particles collected in the Joint European Torus with the ITER-like W ...

The paper is an overview of the H-mode physics studies on TCV. Historically, ELMy H-modes were obtained with ohmic heating only (q953 are now routinely obtained. The pedestal database developed for EUROfusion is presented and used within the paper

This paper analyses the final phase of hybrid scenario discharges at JET, the reduction of auxiliary heating towards finally the Ohmic phase. The here considered Ohmic phase is mostly still in the current flattop but may also be in the current ramp down. F ...

In plasmas heated with deuterium beams a deficit of the expected fusion neutron rate is an indicator of the deterioration of the fast-ion confinement, caused, for instance, by magnetohydrodynamic instabilities. The capability of predicting this deficit dur ...

In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of type-I edge-localized modes (ELM) time series from the JET tokamak, the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment, have been investigated through recurrence plots (RPs). The analysis has be ...

Fishbones are ubiquitous in high-performance JET plasmas and are typically considered to be unimportant for scenario design. However, during recent high-performance hybrid scenario experiments, sporadic and explosive fishbone oscillations with sawtooth rec ...
