A three-dimensional (3-D) granular model which simulates fluid flow within solidifying alloys with a globular microstructure, such as that found in grain refined Al alloys, is presented. The model geometry within a representative volume element (RVE) consi ...

A comprehensive micro-macroscopic model of the continuous hardening of 3d-axisymmetric steel components by induction heating has been developed. At the macroscopic scale, the Maxwell and heat flow equations are solved using a mixed numerical formulation : the inductor and the workpiece are enmeshed with finite elements (FE) but boundary elements (BE) are used for the solution of the electromagnetic equations in the ambient air. This method allows the inductor to be moved with respect to the workpiece withou

Since the 4th 1998 edition, there have been numerous crucial advances to the modelling and the basic understanding of solidification phenomena, and with its linking to experimental results. These topics have been incorporated into this 5th Fully Revised Ed ...

Over the past forty years, the series of MCWASP conferences has been the witness of the fantastic developments in the field of modeling of welding and solidification processes. This has been made possible thanks to the exponential increase in computing pow ...

The biomedical industry shows increasing interest in the joining of dissimilar metals, especially with the aim of developing devices that combine different mechanical and corrosive properties. As an example, nickel titanium shape memory alloys joined to st ...

This paper presents a few examples of the application of electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) to solidification problems. For directionally solidified Al-Zn samples, this technique could reveal the change in dendrite growth directions from < 100 > to < ...

Near eutectic Al-Cu droplets were rapidly solidified by Impulse Atomization. A wide range of microstructural scales was obtained at different cooling rates and undercoolings. The micrographs of the investigated samples revealed two distinct zones of differ ...

The anisotropy of the solid-liquid interfacial energy, gamma(sl), plays a key role in the accurate prediction of growth morphologies in metallic alloys. This interfacial energy anisotropy can vary duo to alloy composition, especially when that of the pure ...

One approach is to tailor the solidification microstructures of lightweight components using dense materials. This study examines the microstructures and mechanical properties of near eutectic Al-Cu alloys under different thermal histories, covering both h ...

A new criterion for the appearance of hot tears in metallic alloys is proposed. Based upon a mass balance performed over the liquid and solid phases, it accounts for the tensile deformation of the solid skeleton perpendicular to the growing dendrites and for the induced interdendritic liquid feeding. This model introduces a critical deformation rate beyond which cavitation, i.e. nucleation of a first void, occurs. As should be expected, this critical value is an increasing function of the thermal gradient a

We present a two-dimensional granular model for the mechanical behavior of an ensemble of globular grains during solidification. The grain structure is produced by a Voronoi tessellation based on an array of predefined nuclei. We consider the fluid flow ca ...

Directional solidification experiments on Cu-Sn peritectic alloys have been conducted at very low velocity in a high-thermal-gradient Bridgman furnace. The size of the samples has been reduced in order to decrease natural convection and the associated macr ...

Single pan thermal analyses (SPTA) have been performed on Cu-14.5 wt.% Sn, Cu-21.3 wt.% Sri and Cu-26.8 wt.% Sit peritectic alloys. For this purpose, a SPTA assembly has been built and calibrated. As the latent heat is a function of temperature and composi ...

The growth kinetics advantage of twinned aluminum dendrites over regular ones is still an unsolved problem of solidification. Although it is linked to the tip geometry, the influence of a coherent (1 1 1) twin plane on a < 1 1 0 > twinned dendrite tip is u ...

Two important factors affecting hot tearing - semi-solid constitutive behaviour and grain percolation - have been simulated through the use of microstructure models based on granular structures. The semi-solid model geometry is based on a modified Voronoi ...

The solidification of an aluminum-copper alloy has been simulated in 3D using a granular model. Compared to previous similar 2D approaches for where only one phase is continuous, the extension to 3D allows for concurrent continuity of the solid and liquid ...

A new mesoscopic model able to describe percolation of globular-equiaxed grains, highly relevant for hot tearing formation in castings, has been developed. This model is inspired from the granular model of Sistaninia et al. [1-5] that considers polyhedral ...

The mechanical behavior of partially solidified Al-Cu alloys is investigated to assess the influence of mushy zone deformation on hot tearing. For this purpose, the results of a semi-solid tensile test conducted in situ using X-ray microtomography are comp ...

Micropores formed in Al-Cu alloys cast under controlled conditions have been analyzed using high-resolution X-ray tomography. The influence of inoculation conditions, copper content, cooling rate and initial hydrogen content on the morphology of pores has ...

A new 3D coupled hydro-mechanical granular model that simulates hot tearing formation in metallic alloys is presented. The hydro-mechanical model consists of four separate 3D modules. (I) The Solidification Module (SM) is used for generating the initial so ...
