In directional solidification experiments on hypoperitectic Cu-Sn alloys at low velocity and high thermal gradient, both lamellar and fibrous coupled peritectic growth patterns have been observed. Two phenomena that had not been observed in previous experi ...

With a few exceptions, phase-field simulations of dendritic growth in cubic materials have been modeled using simple expressions for the interfacial energy anisotropy and with strong anisotropy. However, recent experimental results show that the Dendrite O ...

The deformation-induced macrosegregation in continuous casting of steel has been simulated using a finite-volume scheme. For that purpose, a two-dimensional heat-flow computation was first performed in a Eulerian reference frame attached to the mold, assuming a unique solidification path, i.e., a unique relationship between temperature and enthalpy. This gave the stationary enthalpy field in the longitudinal section of the slab. On the other hand, bulging of the slab between two rolls was calculated in the

An effective hydrogen diffusion coefficient has been calculated for two solidifying Al - 4.5 wt.% Cu and Al - 10 wt.% Cu alloys as a function of the volume fraction of solid. For this purpose, in situ X-ray tomography was performed on these alloys. For eac ...

The variety of microstructures that form at low solidification speed in peritectic alloys, bands, and islands, or even coupled (or cooperative) growth of the primary alpha and peritectic beta phases, have been previously explained by nucleation-growth mech ...

The present contribution reviews the recent progress related to the influence of icosahedral short-range order (ISRO) and icosahedral quasicrystal (iQC) formation on the solidification of fcc alloys through minor solute element additions. From intensive cr ...

The gold indium system is of primary interest for bonding processes such as solid liquid interdiffusion bonding. In order to optimize the manufacturing parameters, it is essential to know which intermetallic compounds (IMCs) are formed when solid Au and li ...

Five ternary Sn-0.7Cu-xNi alloys with nickel contents in the range 0-1000 ppm have been directionally solidified at different growth rates. The competition between primary tetragonal Sn cells/dendrites, eutectic and primary Cu6Sn5 is interpreted with phase ...

Growth directions and crystallographic orientations of solidification microstructures have been measured in Al-Zn alloy near the eutectic composition. Al dendrites in Al-92 wt.% Zn alloy were found to grow along the I 10) directions while Zn dendrites in A ...

In a recent contribution, we have reported that dendrites in the aluminum-zinc binary system can change their growth direction continuously from {100} to {110} as the concentration of zinc CZn increases from 5 to 90 wt pct.[1] This was interpreted as an in ...

Understanding the formation of materials at elevated temperatures is critical for determining their final properties. Synchrotron-based X-ray tomographic microscopy is an ideal technique for studying such processes because high spatial and temporal resolut ...

A long lasting controversy on the nature of the reaction between liquid, Al and Al45Cr7 has been ended by planar front solidification experiments of Al-Cr alloy in a Bridgman furnace. Cr depletion in the liquid ahead of the quenched planar interface proves ...

This is the first account of the history of modelling dendritic and cellular solidification. While Part I reviewed the progress up to the year 2000 [Kurz W, Fisher DJ, Trivedi R. Progress in modelling solidification microstructures in metals and alloys: de ...

A model which takes into account the main phenomena occurring during the laser-cladding process is proposed. For a given laser power, beam radius, powder jet geometry, and clad height, this model evaluates two other processing parameters, namely, the laser-beam velocity and the powder feed rate. It considers the interactions between the powder particles, the laser beam, and the molten pool. The laser power reaching the surface of the workpiece is estimated and, assuming this power is used to remelt the subs

Inverse methods can be used in solidification and related processes for the estimation of boundary conditions or physical properties of materials. For heat flow problems, these methods are based upon a minimisation of the errors between calculated and measured temperatures at given locations and times of the space-time domain, the calculated values being obtained from a numerical solution of the heat flow equation. In the present case, a maximum a posteriori technique has been implemented into a finite elem

Alloys based on the Sn-0.7Cu-xNi system are potential Pb-free solders. In this paper we report on the solidification characteristics and microstructures of Sn-0.7Cu alloys containing 0-1,000 ppm nickel. The microstructural observations show that increasing ...

A 3D multiphase-field (PhF) model has been developed in order to study the formation of a micropore constrained to grow in a solid network (i.e., pinching effect). The model accounts for the pressure difference due to capillarity between liquid and gas, th ...

The new welding process avoids cracking in welding, in repair welding or in cladding of parts of metallic alloys which are sensitive to hot cracking. The process is using a first heat source (15), directed to the parts (11, 12) of the metallic alloy forming a melt pool (14) on 5 the parts (11, 12) of metal or metallic alloy. The heat source (15) and the parts (11, 12) are moved relative to each other. The process is characterized in that there is one (13) or more additional heat sources directed to the part

A comprehensive three-dimensional mathematical model based upon the Abaqus software has been developed for the computation of the thermomechanical state of the solidifying strand during direct chill (DC) casting of rolling sheet ingots and during subsequent cooling. Based upon a finite element formulation, the model determines the temperature distribution, the stresses and the associated deformations in the metal. For that purpose, the thermomechanical properties of the alloy have been measured up to the co

A three-dimensional (3-D) coupled hydromechanical granular model has been developed and validated to directly predict, for the first time, hot tear formation and stress strain behavior in metallic alloys during solidification. This granular model consists ...
