The electronic miniaturization and the computer evolution (microprocessor, transputer) have contributed to the use of electric drives in a lot of applications. Because of its flexibility, the electric drive becomes an essential element to work out new concepts of artificial prosthesis. The progress of biomaterial technology, which gave birth to several artificial organs like permeable membrane (oxygenator), biodegradable material (vascular surgery), artificial arteries, etc., now permits to envisage the rea

This paper presents an analytical model for the force and torque developed by a reaction sphere actuator for satellite attitude control. The reaction sphere is an innovative momentum exchange device consisting of a magnetic bearings spherical rotor that ca ...

The main problem to obtain considerable deformation with dielectric electro-active polymer based technology is the electrical breakdown. A simple solution consists in pre-stretching the elastomer before activating it which cancels the snap-through effect a ...

Designing transducers or motors, requires the analysis of a lot of parameters such as length, temperature, efficiency, weight, etc. The solution to obtain the optimum results for given specifications is to analyze globally all the free parameters in one go, with an optimization algorithm based on the "Prodesign" software, including its optimization module, developed by the INPG in Grenoble (France). A general module makes it possible then to get the optimum according to the constraints of the problem. In fu

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have extremely advantageous characteristics such as lightness, compactness, flexibility, and large displacements. However, in order to operate, they can require voltages in the order of several thousands of volts. Thus ...

This article demonstrates person localization using a hybrid system consisting of an electromagnetic positioning system and a depth camera to authorize access control. The ultimate aim of this system is to distinguish moving people in a defined area by tra ...

Dielectric elastomer actuator augmented aorta (DEA) represents a novel approach with high potential for assisting a failing heart. The soft tubular device replaces a section of the aorta and increases its diameter when activated. The hemodynamic interactio ...

Soft Magnetic Composites (SMCs) possess promising electromagnetic characteristics and attract intense research and application interest in the engineering community. Fabrication of composites with customized architecture is feasible due to the recent advan ...

Magnetorheological (MR) valves attracted the interest of researchers across diverse fields, owing to the controllable nature of MR fluid. The use of MR fluid in valves enables fast response, energy efficiency, and robustness, while several studies designed ...

This paper addresses the design and optimization of a small-sized linear electrodynamic actuator. This actuator is aimed to be inserted under a computer key in order to produce a force feedback to the user. Replacing the current rubber dome supporting the ...

New trends in electroactive-polymers (EAP) based devices for soft actuators and for electrocaloric cooling revive studies on compact, efficient, reversible and low power supply. High electrode resistance, high voltage and small capacitance of EAPs represen ...

A new hearing therapy based on direct acoustic cochlear stimulation was developed for the treatment of severe to profound mixed hearing loss. The device efficacy was validated in an initial clinical trial with four patients. This semi-implantable investiga ...

Piezoelectric motors (usually called ultrasonic) show interesting characteristics. Not only they deliver high torques at low speeds but their structure confers to them a braking torque without energy supply. This paper firstly present a list of possible solutions for this type of motors. Thereafter, the most promising solution is chosen and developed more in detail. Finite elements simulations of the vibration modes of the motor are carried out with the aim of determining the resonance frequency of the syst

The variation of pressure of the blood is a key parameter in the development of ventricular assist device. This latter is useful in order to synchronize the behavior of the actuator with the cardiac frequency. This paper presents a sensor made of a dielect ...

NOVELTY - For control mono-phase or multiphase machines in motor or generating mode with or without pulse width modulation. USE - Control of electrical rotating machines. ADVANTAGE - Can be used for control of single phase and three phase machines. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The method for control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (10) from a supply source (11) without direct sensing, having at least a phase, a winding, and a rotor. The supply to each phase of the motor is controlled. The output signals f

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are a recent type of smart materials that show impressive performances as soft actuators, making them a promising technology for the development of implantable artificial muscles and soft robotic devices. Notably, they ...

Magnetic manipulation is a method used for biomedical applications to remotely control micro-robots in a contactless manner. The electromagnet manipulator should control a magnetic field with 3 degrees of freedom inside a region of interest. In various cas ...

In order to reap the benefits of Dielectric Elastomer Actuator (DEA) high energy density, the electronics powering the actuator should be as small as possible. Knowing that only a small fraction of the energy delivered to DEAs is effectively converted into ...

The Center for Artificial Muscles of EPFL in Neuchâtel focuses his research on designing a less invasive cardiac assist device based on a dielectric elastomer actuator. The idea is to place a ring around the aorta and activate it to help failing heart pump ...
