Devices in mobile ad hoc networks work as network nodes and relay packets originated by other nodes. Mobile ad hoc networks can work properly only if the participating nodes cooperate in routing and forwarding. For individual nodes it might be advantageous not to cooperate, though. The new routing protocol extensions presented in this paper make it possible to detect and isolate misbehaving nodes, thus making it unattractive to deny cooperation. In the presented scheme, trust relationships and routing decis

We examine the fundamental properties that determine the basic performance metrics for opportunistic communications. We first consider the distribution of intercontact times between mobile devices. Using a diverse set of measured mobility traces, we find a ...

We consider the problem of ranging with Impulse Radio (IR) Ultra-WideBand (UWB) radio under weak Line Of Sight (LOS) environments and additive Gaussian noise. We use a Bayesian approach where the prior distribution of the channel follows the IEEE 802.15.4a ...

In this paper, we focus on the localization of a passive source from time difference of arrival (TDOA) measurements. TDOA values are computed with respect to pairs of fixed sensors that are required to be accurately time-synchronized. This constitutes a we ...

Applications performing streaming of phasor- measurement data require low latency and losses from the communication network. Traditionally, such requirements are realized through wired infrastructure. Recently, wireless infras- tructure has gained attentio ...

We study the communication network of an on-campus active distribution network (ADN) that comprises phasor measurement units (PMUs) connected to medium-voltage transformers. Within stringent time delays and with minimal loss the PMUs periodically transfer ...

We consider unicast equation-based rate con-trol, where, at some points in time, a sender adjusts its rate to f(p,r), where p is an on-line estimate of the loss-event rate observed by this source, r of the average round-trip time, and f is a TCP throughput formula. Conventional wisdom holds that such a source would be TCP-friendly, that is, it would not attain a larger long-run average send rate than a TCP source under the same operating conditions. Our goal is to identify the key factors that determine whe

Contact-based simulations are a very popular tool for the analysis of opportunistic networks. They are used for evaluation of networking metrics, for quantifying the effects of infrastructure and for the design of forwarding strategies. However, little evi ...

In feed-forward time-sensitive networks with Deficit Round-Robin (DRR), worst-case delay bounds were obtained by combining Total Flow Analysis (TFA) with the strict service curve characterization of DRR by Tabatabaee et al. The latter is the best-known sin ...

We consider unicast equation based rate control, where a source estimates the loss event ratio p, and, primarily at loss events, adjusts its sending rate to f(p). Function f is assumed to represent the loss-throughput relation that TCP would experience. When no loss occurs, the rate may also be increased according to some additional mechanism. We assume that the loss event interval estimator is non-biased. If the loss process is deterministic, the control is TCP-friendly in the long run, i.e, the average th

An epidemic spreading in a network calls for a decision on the part of the network members: They should decide whether to protect themselves or not. Their decision depends on the trade off between their perceived risk of being infected and the cost of bein ...

We analyze some queueing problems arising in guaranteed service and controlled load networks using min-plus algebra. We find an explicit representation for the sub-additive closure of the minimum of two operators, and we introduce a new, useful family of idempotent, time-varying, and min-plus linear operators. We model queueing systems arising in networks networks as non-linear min-plus systems that can be bounded by linear systems, and apply our concepts to: the optimal shaper studied by Anantharam and Kon

We present Asymmetric Best-Effort, a novel service to provide a ``throughput versus delay jitter'' differentiated service for IP packets. With this service, every best effort packet is marked as either green or blue. Green packets, typically sent by real-time applications such as interactive audio, receive more losses during bouts of congestion than blue ones. In return, they receive less delay jitter. Both green and blue services are best-effort. The incentive to choose one or other is based on the nature

We present an architecture for implementing a wireless physical layer in a packet-based network simulator. We have integrated this architecture in the popular ns-2 network simulator and used it to implement an impulse-radio ultra-wide band (IR-UWB) physical layer. Contrary to the current wireless physical layer implementation of ns-2, in our case a packet is fully received by our physical layer before being delivered to the MAC layer. A packet detection and timing acquisition model has been implemented. Fur

Active power distribution networks require sophisticated monitoring and control strategies for efficient energy management and automatic adaptive reconfiguration of the power infrastructure. Such requirements are realized by deploying a large number of various electronic automation and communication field devices, such as Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) or Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), and a reliable two-way communication infrastructure that facilitates transfer of sensor data and control signals.

The present invention proposes a method to filter electronic messages in a message processing system, this message processing system comprising a temporary memory for storing the received messages intended to users, a first database dedicated to a specific ...

The random trip model was recently proposed as a generic mobility model that contains many particular mo-bility models, including the widely-known random waypoint and random walks, and accommodates more realistic sce-narios. The probability distribution of the movement of a mobile in all these models typically varies with time and converges to a steady state" distribution (viz. station-ary distribution), whenever the last exists. Protocol per-formance during this transient phase and in steady-state may diff

The problem of optimal control of power distribution systems is becoming increasingly compelling due to the progressive penetration of distributed energy resources in this specific layer of the electrical infrastructure. Distribution systems are, indeed, e ...

With WDM networks, the failure of a single link or component may cause the simultaneous failure of several optical channels, potentially making impossible the restoration by rerouting in higher layers directly using the optical network (SDH, ATM, IP). To address this, we introduce the concept of Design Protection, which aims at making such failure propagations impossible. We present the Disjoint Alternate Path (DAP) algorithm, which places optical channels in order to maximize design protection. We show the
