Collaborative ad-hoc dissemination of information has been proposed as an efficient means to disseminate information among devices in a wireless ad-hoc network. Devices help in forwarding the information channels to the entire network, by disseminating the ...

There have been many proposals for constructing routing tables for Distributed Hash Tables (DHT). They can be classified into two groups: A) those that assume that the peers are uniformly randomly distributed in the identifier space, and B) those that allo ...

Existing methods for demand response either assume direct control of appliances by supplier, or assume that consumers adapt their load by reacting to pricing signals. The former are intrusive and might not scale well; the latter expose consumers to price volatility and require detailed awareness of time varying prices. We propose an alternative approach, based on ``service curves", which uses the following two ingredients. (1) The rate at which a consumer may draw power from the grid may be controlled by re

We consider low run-time complexity power management in distribution grids with renewable energy sources (RESs) and batteries, where forecasts are unavailable. We propose iterative Lyapunov Real-time Control (iLypRC), a fast online algorithm, which does no ...

The increase in the penetration of wind in the current energy mix is hindered by its high volatility and poor predictability. These shortcomings lead to energy loss and increased deployment of fast-ramping generators. The use of energy storage compensates ...

Time-synchronization attacks on phasor measurement units (PMUs) pose a real threat to smart grids; it was shown that they are feasible in practice and that they can have a nonnegligible negative impact on state estimation, without triggering the bad data d ...

The problem of optimal control of power distribution systems is becoming increasingly compelling due to the progressive penetration of distributed energy resources in this specific layer of the electrical infrastructure. Distribution systems are, indeed, experiencing significant changes in terms of operation philosophies that are often based on optimal control strategies relying on the computation of linearized dependencies between controlled (e.g. voltages) and control variables (e.g. power injections). As

A novel scheme for processing packets in a router is presented, which provides for load sharing among multiple network processors distributed within the router. It is complemented by a feedback control mechanism designed to prevent processor overload. Incoming traffic is scheduled to multiple processors based on a deterministic mapping. The mapping formula is derived from the robust hash routing (also known as the highest random weight - HRW) scheme, introduced in K.W. Ross, IEEE Network, 11(6), 1997, and D

Performance evaluation of the 802.11 MAC protocol is classically based on the decoupling assumption, which hypothesizes that the backoff processes at different nodes are independent. A necessary condition for the validity of this approach is the existence ...

Renewable energy resources, such as photovoltaic panels, typically have very volatile power-injection characteristics, which poses a number of challenges to the real-time control of electrical grids that contain a significant fraction of these resources. Recently, a new paradigm for controlling such grids, termed COMMELEC, was proposed; it uses explicit power setpoints instead of droop-control. Central to this new paradigm is an abstract message format that enables resources to delegate the decisions relate

We consider the transmission of variable bit rate (VBR) video over a network offering a guaranteed service such as ATM VBR or the guaranteed service of the IETF. The guaranteed service requires that the flow accepted by the network has to be conforming with a traffic envelope sigma. In this context, the output of the video encoder is constrained by the traffic envelope defined at the network entry point, the playback delay budget and the decoding buffer size. In previous works, the constraints are satisfied

Some recent papers [KMT97, MR98] have shown that congestion control based on additive increase and multiplicative decrease tends to share bandwidth according to proportional fairness. Proportional fairness is a form of fairness which distributes bandwidth with a bias in favour of flows using a smaller number of hops, this is in contrast with max-min fairness, which gives absolute priority to small flows. We revisit those results by using the modelling framework based on the ordinary differential equation me

We present an architecture for implementing a wireless physical layer in a packet-based network simulator. We integrate this architecture in the popular ns-2 network simulator and use it to implement an impulse-radio ultra-wide band (IR-UWB) physical layer ...

We consider the design of optimal strategies for joint power adaptation, rate adaptation and scheduling in a multi-hop wireless network. Most existing strategies for ad-hoc networks control either power and scheduling, or rates and scheduling, but not the three together as we do. We assume the underlying physical layer allows fine-grained rate adaptation (like in 802.11a/g, HDR/CDMA, UWB). Our goal is to find properties of the power control in an optimal joint design. In the linear regime (i.e when the rate

Devices in mobile ad hoc networks work as network nodes and relay packets originated by other nodes. Mobile ad hoc networks can work properly only if the participating nodes cooperate in routing and forwarding. For individual nodes it might be advantageous not to cooperate, though. The new routing protocol extensions presented in this paper make it possible to detect and isolate misbehaving nodes, thus making it unattractive to deny cooperation. In the presented scheme, trust relationships and routing decisi

Some recent papers have shown that congestion control based on additive increase and multiplicative decrease tends to share bandwidth according to proportional fairness. Proportional fairness is a form of fairness which distributes bandwidth with a bias in favour of flows using a smaller number of hops; this is in contrast with max-min fairness, which gives absolute priority to small flows. In mobile ad-hoc networks, nodes act both as terminals and information relays, and participate in a common routing protocol, such as Dynamic Source Routing (DSR). The network is vulnerable to routing misbehavior, due to faulty or malicious nodes. Misbehavior detection systems aim at removing this vulnerability. In this paper we investigate the use of an Artificial Immune System (AIS) to detect node misbehavior in a mobile ad-hoc network using DSR. The system is inspired by the natural immune system of verte
