An understanding of the behaviour of saturated/unsaturated soils is important for the design and analysis of geostructures. In this paper a continuum approach based on a structured thermodynamic theory of mixtures developed by Svendsen & Hutter (1995), in ...

Rainfall-induced landslides in steep soil slopes of volcanic origin are a major threat to human lives and infrastructure. In the context of constructing early warning systems in regions where extensive data on landslide occurrences and associated rainfall ...

Using advanced hydrogeological and geomechanical finite element modelling, it has been possible to model the mechanical behaviour of a large slope movement, the Triesenberg landslide. This slope is located along the Rhine valley in the Principality of Liec ...

Experimental tests were conducted to characterise the hydro-mechanical behaviour of shot-clay MX-80 bentonite. Granular bentonite was mixed continuously with water and shot on the walls of a tunnel section at the Grimsel Underground Research Laboratory (UR ...

Before this study, no analytical models had been made available for describing the behaviour of plane geostructures subjected to thermal and mechanical actions. This knowledge gap notably represented a limitation for investigations about the behaviour of s ...

Gas shales are usually partially saturated due to hydrocarbon generation and often have a low in-situ degree of saturation less than 40 %. During stimulation, substantial fluid imbibition into the formation occurs due to high suction. Recent research on th ...

This paper presents the results of an experimental study related to the thermal effects on kaolin clay cyclic mobility. The thermal effects were identified by comparing the experimental results of cyclic triaxial tests performed at high temperature (90 C) ...

This paper presents a dynamic fully coupled formulation for saturated and unsaturated soils that undergo large deformations based on material point method. Governing equations are applied to porous material while considering it as a continuum in which the ...

Geomechanical stability issues may arise due to induced thermal stresses because CO2 will generally reach the storage formation at a temperature lower than that of the reservoir. Cold injection will form a cold region around the injection well, which will ...

A coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is presented for the analysis of landslide motion during crisis episodes. The mathematical formulation is used to model a natural slope affected by a multiple slip surface failure mechanism, in which pore water pressu ...

This paper investigates the impact of the thermally induced deformation of soil on the serviceability mechanical performance (i.e., deformation-related) of energy pile groups. The work is based on the results of a full-scale in-situ test that was performed ...

Prior to this study, no simplified yet rational methods were available for estimating the vertical displacements of energy pile groups subjected to thermal loads. Observing such a challenge, the goal of this study has been threefold: (i) to extend the inte ...

Deep geological repository involving a multi-barrier system constitutes one of the most promising options to isolate high-level radioactive waste from the human environment. The efficiency of Engineered-Barrier Systems (EBS) is highly based on the complex behaviour of bentonite. To improve the understanding of the processes involved in the EBS, results from a near-to-real scale experiment, the FEBEX experiment, are studied by means of a thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) finite element approach including a consi

We examine the pore space evolution during saturated stage of soil drying as obtained via porosimetry. This is modeled at a microscale using Poiseuille flow through the capillary vessels of the size of the actual modal pores, with deformable walls driven bym evaporation flux at the external boundary. Onset of desaturation and the post-saturation stage are subsequently simulated as water cavitation mechanism and moving liquid/vapor interface inside the pores.

This study explores and validates a machine learning approach for the practical, effective, and precise prediction of the thermo-physical characteristics that are essential for the analysis and design of shallow geothermal systems, including borehole heat ...

A full-scale experimental site with four energy test piles was built on the campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland. This site was used to investigate interaction effects within a group of energy piles. First, the groun ...

Over the past two decades, the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of earth-contact structures such as piles, walls, slabs, and tunnels, which simultaneously provide structural support and energy supply, has been studied through various field experiments and ...

Temperature highly affects pavement performance. High and low temperatures not only affects the viscosity of asphalt concrete but also has an impact on the moisture flow within pavements. At temperatures below 0°C the freezing of pavements dramatically changes the permeability and frost action might occur forcing water to flow upwards to the freezing front resulting in frost heave and other pavement distress.

Energy geostructuresprovide low carbon, cost-effective and local energy solutions to structures and infrastructures, which opens a new era for the geotechnical engineering practice, by extending the conventional role of geotechnicaldesign to the one of add ...

The development of ground source heat pumps has facilitated the use of geothermal power at shallow depths. Initially, ground heat exchangers were buried in trenches or boreholes, but recent investigations and increasing congestion of landscapes have sugges ...
