In recommender systems, usually, a central server needs to have access to users' profiles in order to generate useful recommendations. Having this access, however, undermines the users' privacy. The more information is revealed to the server on the user-it ...

Short Message Service (SMS) has become extremely popular in many countries, and represents a multi-billion dollars market. Yet many consumers consider that the price cellular network operators charge for it is too high. In this paper, we explain that there exist alternatives to cellular networks for the provision of SMS. In particular, we present the Self-Organizing Wireless messaging nEtwoRk (SOWER), an all-wireless network operable in cities. In SOWER, each user installs a wireless, power-plugged, device

Securing ad hoc networks is notoriously challenging, notably due to the lack of an on-line infrastructure. In particular, key management is a problem that has been addressed by many researchers but with limited results. In this paper, we consider the case ...

As genomic data becomes widely used, the problem of genomic data privacy becomes a hot interdisciplinary research topic among geneticists, bioinformaticians and security and privacy experts. Practical attacks have been identified on genomic data, and thus ...

HTTPS is the de facto standard for securing Internet communications. Although it is widely deployed, the security provided with HTTPS in practice is dubious. HTTPS may fail to provide security for multiple reasons, mostly due to certificate-based authentic ...

Vehicle to Vehicle communication (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure communication (V2I) promise to improve road safety and optimize road traffic through cooperative systems applications. A prerequisite for the successful deployment of vehicular communications is to make them secure. The specific operational environment (moving vehicles, sporadic connectivity, etc. ) makes the problem very novel and challenging. Because of the challenges, a research and development road map is needed. We consider SEVECOM [1

Genome sequencing technology has advanced at a rapid pace and it is now possible to generate highlydetailed genotypes inexpensively. The collection and analysis of such data has the potential to support various applications, including personalized medical ...

We address the problem of time-base synchronization for MPEG services in the presence of network jitter. The conventional methods to obtain a stable clock indication are based on Phase Locked Loops (PLLs). They have the disadvantage of a long startup phase and thus are unsuitable for services that require simultaneous accuracy and rapidity. We develop a new time-base synchronization technique based on a Least-square Linear Regression algorithm (LLR). We show that LLR is able to perform time-base synchroniza

This document presents a research agenda in the area of communication systems. It is meant to be the proposal of the Communication Systems Division of EPFL and its Consortium to the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) of the Swiss National Fund. This proposal is also called MICS (Mobile Information and Communication Systems). The expected (and desirable) characteristics of the proposed program are as follows: - Look further into the future than the mobile communication industry - Have a positiv

New open service architectures provide a management framework for telecommunications services, telecommunications networks and computing resources. However, the introduction of multimedia applications in these architectures will require the management of the underlying multimedia resources (e.g., codecs, converters, etc). Multimedia resources are the basic components that support multimedia communications. In this paper, we tackle this issue by proposing a generic management information model for multimedia

We survey formal methods as they are applied to the development of communication services. We report on industrial and academic projects, consider different communication architectures and work related to the feature interaction problem. Based on our survey, the results reported in the literature and most importantly, on extensive discussions with industry, we investigate important industrial concerns and criticisms about the use of formal methods for the development of communication services. We report on

In this paper we present SECTOR, a set of mechanisms for the secure verification of the time of encounters between nodes in multi-hop wireless networks. This information can be used notably to prevent wormhole attacks (without requiring any clock synchronization), to secure routing protocols based on last encounters (with only loose clock synchronization), and to control the topology of the network. SECTOR is based primarily on distance-bounding techniques, on one-way hash chains and on Merkle hash trees. W

A method of sharing private and/or sensitive data from plurality of data providers to a data user, the data user having a private key and a public key, the method comprising the steps of providing a first data set and encrypting the first data set at a ter ...

CSMA/CA protocols rely on the random deferment of packet transmissions. Like most other protocols, CSMA/CA was designed with the assumption that the nodes would play by the rules. This can be dangerous, since the nodes themselves control their random deferment. Indeed, with the higher programmability of the network adapters, the temptation to tamper with the software or firmware is likely to grow; by doing so, a user could obtain a much larger share of the available bandwidth at the expense of other users.

In multi-hop cellular networks, data packets have to be relayed hop by hop from a given mobile station to a base station and vice-versa. This means that the mobile stations must accept to forward information for the benefit of other stations. In this paper, we propose an incentive mechanism that is based on a charging/rewarding scheme and that makes collaboration rational for selfish nodes. We base our solution on symmetric cryptography to cope with the limited resources of the mobile stations. We provide a

In contrast with conventional networks, mobile ad hoc networks do not provide on-line access to trusted authorities or to centralized servers. For this reason, key management is particularly difficult to implement in such networks. The solutions published so far alleviate the problem by requiring a trusted authority only in the system start-up phase (for the distribution of initial keys or key shares). Here, we consider a more extreme case where there is no central authority at all, not even in the initiali

We introduce a novel framework that provides a logical structure for classifying and organizing fundamental components and concepts of location privacy. Our framework models mobile networks and applications, threats, location-privacy preserving mechanisms, and metrics. We demonstrate the relevance of our framework by showing how the existing proposals in the field of location privacy are embodied appropriately in the framework. Our framework provides "the big picture" of research on location privacy and hen

We propose an object-oriented specification language, FUS++, for expressing the functional behaviors and the desired properties of each telecommunications service at the analysis phase. Our approach is based on Fusion, an object-oriented method that consists of analysis, design, and implementation phases for software development. Accompanying FUS++ is a tool we developed for translating FUS++ specifications to Promela statements; validation of service specifications and detection of feature interactions are
