Recently, several solutions have been proposed to address the complex challenge of protecting individuals’ genetic data during personalized medicine tests. In this short paper, we analyze different privacy threats and propose simple countermeasures for the ...

We expose the vulnerability of an emerging wireless ranging technology, impulse radio ultra-wide band (IR-UWB), to distance-decreasing attacks on the physical communication layer (PHY). These attacks violate the security of secure ranging protocols that al ...

Mobile users expose their location to potentially untrusted entities by using location-based services. Based on the frequency of location exposure in these applications, we divide them into two main types: Continuous and Sporadic. These two location exposu ...

We propose a new approach to securing computer networks. With this approach, we achieve security in a fully self-organized manner; by this we mean that to secure a computer network, a security system does not require any kind of certification authority or centralized server, even for the initialization phase. In our work, we were inspired by PGP because its functionality relies solely on the acquaintances between users. We show that the small-world phenomenon naturally emerges in the PGP system as a consequ

In this article, we propose an architecture for hybrid services, i.e., services that span many network technologies, such as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), cellular networks and networks based on the Internet Protocol (IP). These services will play an important role in the future because they leverage on the existing infrastructures, rather than requiring new and sophisticated mechanisms to be deployed. We explore a few issues related to hybrid services and propose a platform, as well as a se

The academic community has proposed many solutions to address the privacy concerns associated with genomic-data sharing. However, practitioners have not adopted these solutions due to their impact on the data utility. To address this problem, we introduce ...

Popular anonymity mechanisms such as Tor provide low communication latency but are vulnerable to traffic analysis attacks that can de-anonymize users. Moreover, known traffic-analysis-resistant techniques such as Dissent are impractical for use in latency- ...

In mobile wireless networks, third parties can track the location of mobile nodes by monitoring the pseudonyms used for identification. A frequently proposed solution to protect the location privacy of mobile nodes suggests to change pseudonyms in regions ...

We describe the on-going design and implementation of a sensor network for agricultural management targeted at resource-poor farmers in India. Our focus on semi-arid regions led us to concentrate on water-related issues. Throughout 2004, we carried out a s ...

In contrast with conventional networks, mobile ad hoc networks usually do not provide on-line access to trusted authorities or to centralized servers and they exhibit frequent partitioning due to link and node failures and to node mobility. For these reasons, traditional security solutions that require on-line trusted authorities or certificate repositories are not well suited for securing ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose a fully self-organized public-key management system that allows users to gen

Wi-Fi networks have a very strong potential: They are easy to deploy, they use unlicensed frequencies and they provide Internet connectivity that is several times faster than by cable modem. However, two major problems still need to be solved: the lack of ...

Re-use of patients’ health records can provide tremendous benefits for clinical research. One of the first essential steps for many research studies, such as clinical trials or population health studies, is to effectively identify, from electronic health r ...

We propose and evaluate a secure-multiparty-computation (MPC) solution in the semi-honest model with dishonest majority that is based on multiparty homomorphic encryption (MHE). To support our solution, we introduce a multiparty version of the Brakerski-Fa ...

To provide high ranging precision in multipath environments, a ranging protocol should find the first arriving path, rather than the strongest path. We demonstrate a new attack vector that disrupts such precise Time-of-Arrival (ToA) estimation, and allows ...

In recent years, ride-hailing services (RHSs) have become increasingly popular, serving millions of users per day. Such systems, however, raise significant privacy concerns, because service providers are able to track the precise mobility patterns of all r ...

Although many energy efficient/conserving routing protocols have been proposed for wireless sensor networks, the concentration of data traffic towards a small number of base stations remains a major threat to the network lifetime. The main reason is that the sensor nodes located near a base station have to relay data for a large part of the network and thus deplete their batteries very quickly. The solution we propose in this paper suggests that the base station be mobile; in this way, the nodes located clo

Activity-based social networks, where people upload and share information about their location-based activities (e.g., the routes of their activities), are increasingly popular. Such systems, however, raise privacy and security issues: the service provider ...

Location-Sharing-Based Services (LSBS) complement Location-Based Services by using locations from a group of users, and not just individuals, to provide some contextualized service based on the locations in the group. However, there are growing concerns ab ...

A fair exchange protocol is a protocol, in which two (or more) mutually suspicious parties exchange their digital items in a way that neither party can gain an advantage over the other by misbehaving. Many fair exchange protocols have been proposed in the academic literature, but they provide rather different types of fairness. The formal comparison of these proposals remained difficult, mainly, because of the lack of a common formal framework, in which each can be modelled and formal fairness definitions c

Mobile devices are increasingly being used to store and manage users' personal information, as well as to access popular third-party context-based services. Very often, these applications need to determine common availabilities among a set of user schedule ...
