To better understand networking and security aspects of VANETs, we have been investigating network connectivity issues and mappings of car networks to the underlying road topology. Using this mapping and various metrics based on centrality, we locate hot-spots in vehicular networks to determine the most vulnerable points for jamming. We also use these to optimize the placement of roadside units.

The Terminode project follows a system approach to investigate wide area, large, totally wireless networks that we call mobile ad-hoc wide area networks. A network of terminodes is an autonomous, self-operated, wireless multimedia network, independent of any infrastructure. In this paper we present the main challenges and certain initial technical directions.

Providing reliable group communication is an ever recurring issue in distributed settings. In mobile ad hoc networks, this issue becomes more significant since all nodes act as peers, while the issue gets even more challenging due to highly dynamic and unpredictable topology changes. In order to overcome these difficulties, we deviate from the conventional point of view, i.e., we "fight fire with fire", by exploiting the nondeterministic nature of ad hoc networks. Inspired by the principles of gossip mechan

We propose a straightforward technique to provide peer-to-peer security in mobile networks. We show that far from being a hurdle, mobility can be exploited to set up security associations among users. We leverage on the temporary vicinity of users, during ...

Millions of users rely on mobile health (mHealth) apps to manage their wellness and medical conditions. Although the popularity of such apps continues to grow, several privacy and security challenges can hinder their potential. In particular, the simple fa ...

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) allow the monitoring of activity or environmental conditions over a large area, from homes to industrial plants, from agriculture fields to forests and glaciers. They can support a variety of applications, from assisted livi ...

Location-aware smart phones support various location-based services (LBSs): users query the LBS server and learn on the fly about their surroundings. However, such queries give away private information, enabling the LBS to identify and track users. We addr ...

Organizational networks are vulnerable to traffic-analysis attacks that enable adversaries to infer sensitive information from the network traffic – even if encryption is used. Typical anonymous communication networks are tailored to the Internet and are p ...

The increasing availability of genomic data has major implications for personal privacy. The issues raised by genomic privacy reside at the crossroads of medicine, computer science, legislation and public policy. We here describe the design and development of new privacy enhancing technologies that aim to find the optimal balance between usability and privacy of genomic data in clinical care and in biomedical research.

The road to a successful introduction of vehicular communications has to pass through the analysis of potential security threats and the design of a robust security architecture able to cope with these threats. In this paper, we undertake this challenge. I ...

Contrary to the common belief that mobility makes security more difficult to achieve, we show that node mobility can, in fact, be useful to provide security in ad hoc networks. We propose a technique in which security associations between nodes are established, when they are in the vicinity of each other, by exchanging appropriate cryptographic material. We show that this technique is generic, by explaining its application to fully self-organized ad hoc networks and to ad hoc networks placed under an (off-l

We demonstrate the first, to the best of our knowledge, LBS client that safeguards user privacy against non-trustworthy LBS servers. Our collaborative approach allows the client to obtain responses from its near-by peers rather than submitting the query to the LBS. Our demo makes the user aware of her privacy level and offers tunable user parameters. The demo contributes a novel user-centric approach that enhances privacy without altering the business model of location-based services.

The following invention disclosure is generally concerned with the synchronization of receiver time-bases in data transmission networks and specifically concerned with a least squares linear regression technique having a fast startup phase and improved jitter absorption

In each country today, cellular networks operate on carefully separated frequency bands. This separation is imposed by the regulators of the given country to avoid interference between these networks. But, the separation is only valid within the borders of ...

In this paper we present the main challenges in mobile ad-hoc wide area networks (MAWANs). A MAWAN is a wide area, large, (potentially) entirely wireless networks. We describe the Terminodes Project (a 10-year-long research program (2000-2010) in MAWANs, see http://www.terminodes.org) that investigates issues and challenges in MAWANs. The name of the project comes from the fact that the elements of the network act as nodes and terminals at the same (terminodes).

This paper proposes a method to ease the creation of -distributed- telecommunications services. The method is based on a generic component model which is a common software architecture applicable to the design of every component of a telecommunications service. The concepts, architecture and specification of the Generic Component Model are presented. The method based on the Generic Component Model is then applied to the design of a Connection Management Service on top of an ATM communication platform

A privacy-preserving method for performing a disease susceptibility test on a patient, said method comprising: (I) performing homomorphic computations, (J) obtaining a test result which is partly decrypted with a first part (prk1 resp. prk2) of a private k ...

We introduce a model that allows anonymous yet accountable access to services in mobile communication systems. This model is based on the introduction of a new business role, called the customer care agency, and a ticket based mechanism for service access. We introduce the general idea of ticket based service access, and present a categorisation of ticket types and ticket acquisition models. We analyse the role of customer care agencies and emphasise their advantages.
