In wireless systems, neighbor discovery (ND) is a fundamental building block: determining which devices are within direct radio communication is an enabler for networking protocols and a wide range of applications. To thwart abuse of ND and the resultant c ...

Some ISPs are trying to become part of the online advertising market. Such ISPs either: (i) cooperate with online advertising entities (e.g., ad networks) by providing users’ private information to achieve better ad targeting in exchange for a share of the ...

This document presents a new research domain in the area of communication systems. It is meant to be the proposal of the Communication Systems Division of EPFL and its Consortium to the National Pole of Competence of the Swiss National Fund. The expected (and desirable) characteristics of the proposed domain are as follows: 1.Be more future-looking than what is currently considered by the mobile communication industry 2.Have a positive impact on civilization and contain challenging societal and business iss

In recent years, wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) have established thousands of WiFi hot spots in cafes, hotels and airports in order to offer to travelling Internet users access to email, web or other Internet service. However, two major problems still slow down the deployment of this kind of networks: the lack of a seamless roaming scheme and the variable quality of service experienced by the users. This paper provides a response to these two problems: We present a solution that, on the one han

Differential privacy (DP) has become widely accepted as a rigorous definition of data privacy, with stronger privacy guarantees than traditional statistical methods. However, recent studies have shown that for reasonable privacy budgets, differential priva ...

Exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure provide cryptographically-strong tracking protection with unnoticeable "single-hop" network latencies by leveraging a client-relay- server architecture, in which the clients, relays (trusted or untrusted), an ...

We introduce game theory as a formal framework in which exchange protocols can be modeled and their properties can be studied. We use this framework to give a formal definition for rational exchange relating it to the concept of Nash equilibrium in games. In addition, we study the relationship between rational exchange and fair exchange. We prove that fair exchange implies rational exchange, but the reverse is not true. The practical consequence of this is that rational exchange protocols may provide intere

One major obstacle to developing precision medicine to its full potential is the privacy concerns related to genomic-data sharing. Even though the academic community has proposed many solutions to protect genomic privacy, these so far have not been adopted ...

Accounting for the perceiving conditions that make up the delivery environment of an application helps improve the efficiency of QoS provisioning systems. It is useless to transmit information whose absence cannot be noticed by the end-user under the actual perceiving conditions. Until now, QoS architectures mostly focused on the transport system and did not integrate the studies achieved in the psychophysics area. In this paper, we propose a QoS framework that accounts for the perceiving conditions. Moreov

The biomedical community is lagging in the adoption of cloud computing for the management of medical data. The primary obstacles are concerns about privacy and security. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of using advanced privacy-enhancing technolo ...

The rapid growth of WiFi over the past two years reveals the willingness of the Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) to develop this technology and the interest of the users in this new service. However, the lack of unified roaming slows down the deployment of this kind of networks. In this paper, we present a simple solution that allows a mobile node to connect to a hot spot managed by a WISP in a secure way while preserving its anonymity. We use a reputation-based system to discourage the WISPs fro

The ARTeMeD project aims to solve problems of interactivity and real-time in teleradiology. It integrates personal multimedia facilities and patient data access in a common platform that allow radiologists to collaborate from remote sites through a suitable communication support. ARTeMeD is based on ATM network technology and an optimized manipulation of medical image material. The ARTeMeD system opens interesting perspectives in the area of collaborative teleradiology

Principal component analysis (PCA) is an essential algorithm for dimensionality reduction in many data science domains. We address the problem of performing a federated PCA on private data distributed among multiple data providers while ensuring data confi ...

IEEE 802.11 works properly only if the stations respect the MAC protocol. We show in this paper that a greedy user can substantially increase his share of bandwidth, at the expense of the other users, by slightly modifying the driver of his network adapter ...

We investigate secure routing in ad hoc networks in which security associations exist only between a subset of all pairs of nodes. We focus on source routing protocols. We show that to establish secure routes, it is in general not necessary that security associations exist between all pairs of nodes

A computer-implemented method and a distributed computer system (100) for privacy- preserving distributed training of a global model on distributed datasets (DS1 to DSn). The system has a plurality of data providers (DP1 to DPn) being communicatively coupl ...

The Terminodes project is designing a wide area, mobile ad-hoc network, which is meant to be used in a public environment, in our approach, the network is run by users themselves. We give a global description of the building blocks used by the basic operation of the network, they all rely on various concepts of self-organization. Routing uses a combination of geography-based information and local, MANET-like protocols. Terminode positioning is obtained either by GPS, or by a relative positioning method. Mob

Public-key certificates allow a multitude of entities to securely exchange and verify the authenticity of data. However, the ability to effectively revoke compromised or untrustworthy certificates is of great importance when coping with misbehavior. In thi ...

The participatory sensing paradigm, through the growing availability of cheap sensors in mobile devices, enables applications of great social and business interest, e.g., electrosmog exposure measurement and early earthquake detection. However, users' priv ...
