New technologies such as MOOCs make it crucial for universities to find the added value of bringing students to campus. Designing lectures that foster more interactions could address this issue, as student engagement and interaction are harder to replicate ...

As more educational activities are conducted online, the need for interactive applications (apps) that can effectively support educators in their practice is increasing. These apps are often created by web developers or by researchers, educators, and even ...

Knowledge sharing has been a trendy and recurring topic in technology-enhanced learning for years. Many advanced platforms have been developed. However face-to-face help session are still often preferred by people who want to enhance their skills. The Go-Lab project aims to engage school students with STEM topics by bringing online laboratory experiments into the classroom. To achieve this, teachers are the key to success. Accordingly, the teacher’s knowledge and skills in inquiry learning with online labs

The evaluation of learning environments depends highly on the evaluation instruments used and on the position of the evaluation in the design cycle. In this article, we present a use-case report of a summative evaluation of a Web-based learning environment for engineering education that allows small groups of students to conduct hands-on experimentation sessions with local and remote access to laboratory devices. This use-case illustrates an evaluation methodology based on a choice of usability engineering

Peer assessment is seen as a powerful supporting tool to achieve scalability in the evaluation of complex assignments in large courses, possibly virtual ones, as in the context of massive open online courses (MOOCs). However, the adoption of peer assessmen ...

Collaborative ideation is a key aspect of many innovation processes. However, a lack of proper support can hinder the process and limit the ability of participants to generate innovative ideas. Thus, we introduce AI-deation, a digital environment for colla ...

The recent rise in the performance and availability of large language models (LLMs) has fueled the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) to support software engineering. Technologies such as Copilot and ChatGPT have become ubiquitous in softw ...

Blood glucose concentrations of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus are subject to very high inter- and intra-patient variability. This variability may be detrimental to the reliability of the treatment, thus resulting in potentially frequent hypo- or h ...

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are freely accessible, openly licensed multimedia documents or interactive tools that can be typically integrated in Learning Management Systems to support courses. With social media platforms becoming the central piece of ...

This paper presents a federated search and social recommen- dation widget. It describes the widget’s interface and the un- derlying social recommendation engine. A preliminary eval- uation of the widget’s usability and usefulness involving 15 subjects is a ...

In this paper we compare the performance of autonomous vehicles at intersections with respect to the type of information shared. For this purpose we consider the cases where vehicles share or not information about their inertia and their intention at the i ...

Education is experiencing a paradigm shift towards blended learning models in technology-enhanced learning (TEL). Despite the potential benefits of blended learning, it also entails additional complexity in terms of monitoring, awareness and reflection, as ...

In this paper, the problem of predicting blood glucose concentrations (BG) for the treatment of patients with type 1 diabetes, is addressed. Predicting BG is of very high importance as most treatments, which consist in exogenous insulin injections, rely on ...

Since 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) came into force, and for the first time they include higher education. Therefore, higher institutions are finding ways to incorporate them into their teachings and research activities. This paper cont ...

This paper presents how advanced social media platforms can be exploited to construct and share contextual spaces enabling the instantiation of agile personal learning environments or informal knowledge management solutions. The usefulness of open plugins ...

Social media have become an indispensable part of daily life, particularly among university students, who regularly browse social news feeds in their spare time. Due to their pervasiveness, social media platforms provide an opportunity for influencing user ...

The introduction of information and communication technologies in education in general, and of Web-based experimentation solutions in engineering education in particular, presents many challenges. This paper describes the current situation according to the ...

The use of digital tools has drastically increased in engineering education, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. These tools generate important ethical issues, in particular in terms of privacy and fairness. However, very few teacher training programmes ...

This paper reports on a study carried out in the framework of the Go-lab Goes Africa project, in which teachers implemented online and offline Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILS) in their classes using the Go-lab platform. After a brief description of the Inquir ...

The European Go-Lab project aims to promote Inquiry-based Learning (IBL) with online laboratories. To support teachers and students in this endeavor, the project provides an IBL model (a sequence of inquiry phases) as well as the technological infrastructu ...
