We report a novel electrochemical sensor based on nanographite grown on platinum microelectrodes for the determination of bilirubin in the presence of normal concentrations of albumin. The albumin is a protein with an intrinsic ability to bind the bilirubi ...

Catalytic chemical vapour deposition (CCVD) is currently the most promising technique to produce carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on a specific site as well as on a large-scale. Here, we review our recent experimental studies on CNTs grown by CCVD. The yield as wel ...

Polarization dependent vanadium L edge x-ray absorption spectra of BaVS3 single crystals are measured in the four phases of the compound. The difference between signals with the polarizations E perpendicular to c and E parallel to c ( linear dichroism) cha ...

This communication reports on the growth of highly uniform KNbO3 nanowires exhibiting a narrow diameter distribution around 60 nm and a length-to-width ratio up to 100. The nanowires were prepared by a hydrothermal route, which enables simple, gram-scale p ...

The interplay between superconductivity and the charge-density wave (CDW) state in pure 1T-TiSe2 is examined through a high-pressure study extending up to pressures of 10 GPa between sub-Kelvin and room temperatures. At a critical pressure of 2 GPa a super ...

We report on the ab-plane optical reflectance measurements of single crystals of Y-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta and Pr-doped YBa2Cu3O7-delta over a wide frequency range from 80 to 40 000 cm(-1) (10 meV-5 eV) and at temperatures between 20 and :300 K. Y and Pr doping both decrease the hole concentration in the CuO2 planes. This has allowed us to investigate the evolution of ab-plane charge dynamics at doping levels ranging from heavily underdoped to nearly optimally doped. Our results of the low-frequency optic

We report resistivity and thermo-electric power measurements of the anatase phase of TiO2 under pressure up to 2.3 GPa. Despite its transparent appearance, the single crystal of anatase exhibits a metallic-like resistivity above 60 K, at all pressures. The ...

The performance of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites-based (MHPs) photovoltaic devices critically depends on the design and material properties of the interface between the light-harvesting MHP layer and the electron transport layer (ETL). Therefo ...

LiCu3O3 is an antiferromagnetic mixed valence cuprate where trilayers of edge -sharing Cu(II)O (3d9) are sandwiched in between planes of Cu(I) (3d10) ions, with Li stochastically substituting Cu(II). Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and de ...

A detailed synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) study performed with a single crystal of BaVS3 (barium vanadium trisulfide) in the temperature range between 10 and 295 K is reported. Aside from the known tetragonal–orthorhombic (240 K) and orthorhombic–mono ...

Superconductivity in high-Tc cuprates is particularly sensitive to disorder due to the unconventional d-wave pairing symmetry. We investigated effects of disorder on the spectral properties of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x high-Tc superconductor. We found that already small defect densities suppress the characteristic spectral signature of the superconducting state. The spectral line shape clearly reflects new excitations within the gap, as expected for de

We investigate the diffusive motion of micron-sized spherical tracers in a viscoelastic actin filament network over the time span of 8 orders of magnitude using optical-tweezers single-particle tracking. The hydrodynamic interactions of a tracer with the s ...

We present infrared and Raman measurements of magnetite (Fe3O4). This material is known to undergo a metal-insulator and a structural transition (Verwey transition) at T-V = 120 K. The structural aspect of the Verwey transition is disclosed by the appearance of additional infrared-active and Raman-active phonons. The frequencies of the infrared-active phonons show no significant singularities at the transition whereas their linewidths increase. The frequency and linewidth of the Raman-active phonon at 670 c

We report on the increase of the Young's modulus (E) of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) upon high temperature heat treatment. The post heat-treatment at 2200-2800 degrees C in a controlled atmosphere results in a ...

The growing library of two-dimensional layered materials is providing researchers with a wealth of opportunity to explore and tune physical phenomena at the nanoscale. Here, we review the experimental and theoretical state-of-art concerning the electron sp ...

We report the in-plane (rho (ab)) and out-of-plane (rho (c)) resistivities in the 4-800 K range on single crystals of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 high-T-c cuprate with T-c = 111 K (rho (c)/rho (ab) approximate to 1000). rho (ab)(T) exhibits "usual" linear behavior and rho (c)(T) follows generally metallic-like, positive slope in the 150-400 K temperature range. There is a clear crossover to semiconductor-like behavior close to T-c. However, for the first time in a chainless high-T-c cuprate we observe a crossover above 5

Magnetic properties of a large assembly of ultrathin graphitic particles obtained by heavy sonication of graphite powder dispersed in N-methylpyrrolidone were measured by electron-spin resonance (ESR). The ESR signal was decomposed into one narrow and one ...

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we probe the electronic band structure of TaTe4 single crystal samples. Resistivity and optical measurements were also performed on the same samples. The experimental data indicate a combination of quasi-one-dimensional and three-dimensional electronic properties. We observe a finite spectral intensity, but no dispersing quasiparticle states near the chemical potential. [S0163-1829(99)06611-4].

Chemical modification such as intercalation or doping of novel materials is of great importance for exploratory material science and applications in various fields of physics and chemistry. Herein, the systematic intercalation of chemically exfoliated few- ...

The anatase and rutile phases of titanium dioxide (TiO2) have been widely studied for their photocatalytic and electronic properties, while the brookite phase is rarely explored. The investigations of intrinsic magnetotransport in mixed-phase systems are limited. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetotransport measurements were performed between 2 K and 300 K in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Both samples with different anatase–rutile–brookite ratios exhibit Curie–Weiss susceptibility. Transport measurements reve
