In urban network, detectors are generally used for signal control. If the data from detectors are also used for travel time estimation and fed back to the traffic management and information systems then it will be a significant contribution for managing urban network. For instance: the model can be applied for performance evaluation of the system and Level of Service of different intersections. It can also be applied for ITS applications such as, Advanced Traveler Information Systems and Public Transport Pr

The present communication is based on the research undertaken by the author and whose principal results are detailed in its thesis entitled « Choice of alternatives of road infrastructures : multicriteria methods » like on the prospects offered by this one ...

In recent years, pavement rutting rate has increased significantly due to constant traffic intensity increment. These solicitations affect the bituminous layers that can quickly attain their permanent deformation limit resistance. This phenomenon can lead ...

Of all modes of transport, transport by road is the most dangerous and the most costly in terms of human lives, according to Road Safety Action Program (2003-2010). In Europe, the 2010 road safety target of halving the number of road fatalities by 2010 seems difficult to be obtained although road safety has been improved recently. Focusing on crash prevention on motorways, this paper proposes a framework for identifying risky traffic conditions using logistic regression models for specific traffic condition

This paper presents the concept of a methodology for identifying in real time risky motorway traffic conditions. This research effort is to automate the extraction of traffic patterns from large data archives using advanced computing techniques. These patt ...

The reduction of virgin bitumen added to asphalt mixtures containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is based on the typical assumption that all the aged binder function in the same way as the virgin binder. However, recent studies conducted by the author ...

Calculated strain distributions in flexible pavement were studied by comparison with measurements made on full-scale structures. The calculated results were obtained by elastic and viscoelastic modellings of these structures. As no stress measurements were collected, the stress distribution was studied by comparing the results of elastic and viscoelastic calculations. For different loading and temperature conditions, and assuming the hypothesis of the French design method for flexible pavement, modellings p

This paper provides fundamental understanding for the use of cumulative plots for travel time estimation on signalized urban networks. Analytical modeling is performed to generate cumulative plots based on the availability of data: a) Case-D, for detector data only; b) Case-DS, for detector data and signal timings; and c) Case-DSS, for detector data, signal timings and saturation flow rate. The empirical study and sensitivity analysis based on simulation experiments have observed the consistency in performa

This paper evaluates the variability of binder rheology for different ageing levels and the influence of ageing at different testing temperatures. Three different ageing levels were applied on a single type of bitumen with a penetration grade of 70/100.The ...

This research aims to verify the hypothesis that lane traffic distribution initiates traffic regimes occurrence in freeways, and in particular to unveil the inter-dependence of lane vehicle allocation and congestion formation. The developed methodological framework consists of (i) a clustering approach to separate traffic regimes and (ii) a multi-regime modeling approach to identify the critical traffic variables that influence the traffic distribution in freeway lanes. The prediction of regime occurrence,

The bitumen quantity to add to asphalt mixtures depends on the surfaces of aggregates and filler to be coated. The formulas currently available in the literature have limitations such as considering all the fillers with the same specific surface or the agg ...

Air pollution is an important aspect for transportation, particularly car emission in urban area. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the global emission of a transport network based on probe car and traffic sensor data. This paper used the microsimulator; AIMSUN to simulate vehicles on a network and also the pollutant emitted. Different penetration rate of probe vehicles were simulated and the accuracy of pollutant estimated from probe vehicles were compared against the emission from the all vehicle

The aim of this paper is to explore a new approach to obtain better traffic demand (Origin-Destination, OD matrices) for dense urban networks using traffic simulation data. From reviewing existing methods, from static to dynamic OD matrix evaluation, possi ...

New Road Construction Concepts (NR2C) is a project of FEHRL supported by the European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme. This project aims at developing perspectives and specific innovations in different transport areas. One of the ideas conce ...

Responding to an impending demand growth at an existing reactive managed lane system, and in order to provide a timely and more effective temporary hard shoulder activation, short-term prediction models are developed. A lane-oriented attribute, namely the ...

As a substantial source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption, the road construction domain has to bring a contribution to the reduction of the environmental impacts. Indeed, an important part of the energy consumption and consequently environmental emissions can be attributed to the construction phase of the roads. During the production and compaction phases, a low viscosity of the bituminous mixture is required and this generally necessitates a temperature above 150 °C (hot mix asphalt

A probabilistic approach is necessary to estimate the magnitude of the braking force that compares in terms of return period with the vertical traffic loads present in bridge design codes. A data set from a Danish Field Operational Test served as support t ...

Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is commonly used in asphalt for road rehabilitation or new constructions. Nevertheless, some physical and chemical phenomena that occur during production, laying and compaction of mixtures containing RAP are not yet complete ...

This article presents a methodology that integrates cumulative plots with probe vehicle data for estimation of travel time statistics (average, quartile) on urban networks. The integration reduces relative deviation among the cumulative plots so that the c ...

This paper presents the development and testing of a methodology for estimation of average travel time on signalised urban networks. The methodology considers the classical analytical procedure, where average travel time on a study link is estimated as the ...
