This paper compares three heuristic methods (SA, TS and GA) applied to the optimal location of FACTS devices in a power system. The optimizations are made on three parameters: the location of the devices, their types and their sizes. The FACTS devices are located in order to enhance the system security. Five types of FACTS controllers are modeled for steady-state studies: TCSC, TCVR, TCPST, SVC and UPFC. Simulations are performed on an IEEE 118-bus power system for several numbers of devices. Results show t

This paper deals with the conceptual design of a decision aid function for restoration (DAFFOR) of transmission networks after major black-outs, and in particular with real time considerations. Some important characteristics of the proposed DAFFOR are: (a) capability of taking into account the dynamic evolution of the network state, due to either a control action or an unforeseen event; (b) interactive mode, which permits users to request a validation of their own suggestion; (c) coupling with an internal d

Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) has an important role in Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). Within this context this paper focuses on the problem of ESSs optimal siting and sizing. Following similar approaches already proposed by the Authors, this paper us ...

The paper discusses the model identification, validation and experimental testing of current-to-voltage dynamic circuit models for a grid-connected MW-class battery. The model refers to an utility-scale 720 kVA/560 kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) ...

In this paper, we describe a method for the energy management, according to minimal costs criteria over one year (month after month), of an electrical utility, which has to deal with nuclear and hydro power plants, sale/purchase and exchange contracts, and spot market business. The chosen method for minimizing the costs is linear programming with most variables continuous, and a few binary ones. The results obtained allow us the management of every power plant, contract and the spot market business, in orde
