An analog electronics emulation solution is investigated in order to assess the state of a power system facing dynamic phenomena such as the transient stability. Two approaches are studied: DC emulation and AC emulation. Both are intended to be integrated ...

Voltage stability imposes important limitations on the power systems operation. Adequate voltage stability margin needs to be obtained through the appropriate scheduling of the reactive power resources. The main countermeasures against voltage instability ...

This paper presents an innovative 3D hardware architecture for power system dynamic and transient stability. Based on an intrinsic parallel architecture by means of mixedsignal circuits (analog and digital) it overcomes the speed of numerical simulators fo ...

This paper proposes and experimentally validates a joint control and scheduling framework for a grid-forming converter-interfaced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) providing multiple services to the electrical grid. The framework is designed to dispat ...

In this paper we compare Nash equilibria analysis and agent-based modelling for assessing the market dynamics of network-constrained pool markets. Power suppliers submit their bids to the market place in order to maximize their payoffs, where we apply rein ...

This work concerns a dedicated mixed-signal power system dynamic simulator. The equations that describe the behavior of a power system can be decoupled in a large linear system that is handled by the analog part of the hardware, and a set of differential e ...

Within the context of the electrical circuit modeling of batteries, this paper proposes an improvement of the most common electric equivalent circuit used for Lithium cells. The main improvement is based on the modeling of the so-called charge redistributi ...

This paper presents a low-power analog simulator for the transient stability of a two-machine power system. The simulator is implemented in a standard digital CMOS process. Its building blocks are: sine shaper, transconductor with extended linear range, and parametric current amplifier. All these circuits operate in weak inversion and use the bulk as an active terminal. Simulation time is typically 104 times shorter than the real time simulated phenomena

We describe the real-time monitoring infrastructure of the smart-grid pilot on the EPFL campus. We experimentally validate the concept of a real-time state-estimation for a 20 kV active distribution network. We designed and put into operation the whole inf ...

This paper describes a mixed-platform framework dedicated to Dynamic Stability Assessment of power systems. DSA refers to tools capable of characterizing the dynamic stability of the system. Time domain simulation is critical for DSA analysis and is done by algorithms known as TD engines. In this work, operations are shared between a software platform and a hardware one. TD simulation is handled by a dedicated mixed-signal electronics implementation. Data flow control, user interfacing, configuration, resul

This paper first designs a holistic coordination framework between transmission system operator (TSO) and distribution system operators (DSOs) to modernize traditional top-to-down (from transmission system to distribution systems) power flexibility provisi ...

The dynamics of power system blackouts and the associated Self-Organized Criticality (SOC) behavior is a subject that receives continuous attention in view of its inherent complexity and relevant consequences. Within this context, the paper focuses on the ...

The recent literature discusses the use of the relaxed Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) for formulating Optimal Power Flow problems (OPF) for radial power grids. However, if the shunt parameters of the lines that compose the power grid are considered, ...

As the power industry considers moving from a deterministic paradigm to a stochastic one to clear the day-ahead market in systems with significant stochastic production, the following question arises: how should a stochastic clearing algorithm be formulate ...

The distribution network restoration problem is by nature a mixed integer and non-linear optimization problem due to the switching decisions and Optimal Power Flow (OPF) constraints, respectively. The link between these two parts involves logical implicati ...

This paper presents a method for optimal sizing and operation of a battery energy storage system (BESS) used for spinning reserve in a small isolated power system. Numerical simulations are performed on a load-frequency control (LFC) dynamic simulator of t ...

This paper studies the multi-area voltage and reactive power management regarding the voltage stability. In this respect, the maximization of effective reactive power reserve is proposed using centralized and decentralized implementations. The proposed for ...

In this paper we present a procedure for the optimal siting and sizing of Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) owned, and directly controlled by network operators of Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). The peculiarity of the proposed planning procedure consists ...

This study explores the practical viability of repurposing aging Kaplan turbines into variable-speed propellers by employing full-size frequency converters. The motivation behind this approach is to improve the provision of Frequency Containment Reserve (F ...

The paper presents a set of experimental investigations related to the study of the dynamic behavior of supercapacitors. The experimentally-inferred results are then used as inputs for an improved version of one of the most common supercapacitor RC-circuit ...
