Extent-based kinetic identification is a kinetic modeling technique that uses concentrations measurements to compute extents and identify reaction kinetics by the integral method of parameter estimation. This article considers the case where spectroscopic ...

Identification of kinetic models and estimation of reaction and mass-transfer parameters can be performed using the extent-based identification method, whereby each chemical/physical process is handled separately [1-3]. This method is used here to analyze ...

Model structure selection and parameter identification for biokinetic modeling of biological wastewater treatment processes is broadly accepted to be a complicated task. Contributing factors include (i) nonlinear behavior, (ii) lack of knowledge, (iii) lac ...

In the intracellular signaling networks that regulate important cell processes, the base pattern comprises the cycle of reversible phosphorylation of a protein, catalyzed by kinases and opposing phosphatases. Mathematical modeling and analysis have been us ...

Integral observers are useful tools for estimating the plant states in the presence of non-vanishing disturbances resulting from plant-model mismatch and exogenous disturbances. It is well known that these observers can eliminate bias in all states, given ...

Data-driven controller tuning for model reference control problem is investigated. A new controller tuning scheme for linear time-invariant single- input single-output systems is proposed. The method, which is based on the correlation approach, uses a sing ...

This note investigates the stability of non-isothermal continuous homogeneous reaction systems involving S species, R reactions, p inlet streams, and one outlet stream. The analysis, which is based on Lyapunov's indirect method, is greatly simplified by transforming the reactor model of S+1 dynamic equations obtained from material and energy balances into R+1 dynamic equations expressed in terms of vessel extents of reaction and heat exchange. By linearizing this reduced model about the equilibrium point of

Reaction systems are typically represented by first-principles models that describe the evolution of the states (typically concentrations, volume and temperature) by means of conservation equations of differential nature and constitutive equations of algeb ...

Interplay between Identification and Optimization in Run-to-run Schemes B. Srinivasan, D. Bonvin ´ Institut d’Automatique, Ecole Polytechnique F´d´rale de Lausanne, ee CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland. Optimization of batch processes has received increasing attention since its provides an unified framework to improve productivity without violating constraints on safety, selectivity, reproducability, etc. Due to uncertainties (disturbances and modeling errors) that are invariably present at the industrial level,

In real-time optimization, the solution quality depends on the model ability to predict the plant KarushKuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. In the case of non-parametric plant-model mismatch, one can add input-affine modifiers to the model cost and constraints a ...

The identification of reaction kinetics represents the main challenge in building models for reaction systems. The identification task can be performed via either simultaneous model identification (SMI) or incremental model identification (IMI), the latter ...

The identification of reaction kinetics involves the determination of a model structure (reaction stoichiometry, rate laws for all reactions) and its corresponding parameters from experimental data. An incremental identification approach for determining the kinetics of homogeneous reaction systems from transient concentration measurements has been developed in previous work [1, 2]. This approach decomposes the identification task into a sequence of sub-tasks that include the identification of the rate laws

Identification of kinetic models is essential for monitoring, control and optimization of industrial processes. Robust kinetic models are often based on first-principles and described by differential equations. Identification of reaction kinetics, namely r ...

Obtaining a reliable gradient estimate for an unknown function when given only its discrete measurements is a common problem in many engineering disciplines. While there are many approaches to obtaining an estimate of a gradient, obtaining lower and upper ...

This work considers the numerical optimization of constrained batch and semi-batch processes, for which direct as well as indirect methods exist. Direct methods are often the methods of choice, but they exhibit certain limitations related to the compromise ...

This position paper gives an overview of the discussion that took place at FIPSE 2 at Aldemar Resort, east of Heraklion, Crete, in June 21-23, 2014. This is the second conference in the series "Future Innovation in Process Systems Engineering" (http://fi-i ...

This position paper is an outcome of discussions that took place at the third FIPSE Symposium in Rhodes, Greece, between June 20-22, 2016 (http://fi-in-pse.org). The FIPSE objective is to discuss open research challenges in topics of Process Systems Engine ...

The paper proposes a tracking-error passivity-based control scheme for the asymptotic stabilization of homogeneous reaction systems. The approach uses the concept of vessel extents in the Port-Hamiltonian (PH) framework. Concretely, the extent-based repres ...

Modifier adaptation (MA) is a real-time optimization (RTO) method characterized by its ability to enforce plant optimality upon convergence despite the presence of model uncertainty. The approach is based on correcting the available model using gradient es ...

In the framework of process optimization, the use of measurements to compensate the effect of uncertainty has re-emerged as an active area of research. One of the ideas therein is to adapt the inputs in order to track the active constraints and push certai ...
