NOVELTY - The electronic display (2) includes a number of cells (12) whose upper faces form a display surface, each cell has an electro-optic display unit (6) with inputs (14) for data to be displayed. A programmable logic circuit (20) is associated with first electrical connections (24,26;25,27) to the display unit and to the inputs. Second electrical connections (34) area provided for other logic circuits belonging to the neighboring cells. USE - For electronic displays. ADVANTAGE - Designed to for a wide

The growth and operation of all living beings are directed by the interpretation, in each of their cells, of a chemical program, the DNA string or genome. This process is the source of inspiration for the Embryonics (embryonic electronics) project, whose f ...

It is clear to all, after a moments thought, that nature has much wemight be inspired by when designing our systems, for example: robustness, adaptability and complexity, to name a few. The implementation of bio-inspired systems in hardware has however been limited, and more often than not been more a matter of artistry than engineering. The reasons for this are many, but one of the main problems has always been the lack of a universal platform, and of a proper methodology for the implementation of such sys

A novel architecture descending from the work of von Neumann, has been developed. This architecture borrows its main principles from living systems. Like living beings, the organisms considered here are able to autonomously develop, maintain their functionality and reproduce. These genomic architectures are developed on reprogrammable hardware. They are not restricted to a given class of functions but accept any combinational and sequential function to be downloaded. These architectures are fault tolerant b

The implementation of bio-inspired systems in hardware has traditionally been more a matter of artistry than of method. The reasons are multiple, but one of the main problems has always been the lack of a universal platform, of a standardized architecture, and of a proper methodology for the implementation of such systems. The ideas presented in this article are the first results of a new research project, "Reconfigurable POEtic Tissue". The goal of the project is the development of a hardware platform capa

In this article, we describe the application of an enhanced genetic algorithm to the problem of hardware-software codesign. Starting from a source code written in a high-level language our algorithm determines, using a dynamically-weighted fitness function ...

The application of evolutionary techniques to the design of custom processing elements bears a strong relation to the natural process that led to the co-evolution of cells and genomes in biological organisms. As such, it is an interesting avenue for an eff ...

This article describes an implementation of a basic multiprocessor system that exhibits replication and differentiation abilities on the POEtic tissue, a programmable hardware designed for bio-inspired applications. As for a living organism, whose existenc ...

In this article, we propose a novel partitioning method for hardware-software codesign based on a genetic algorithm that has been enhanced for this specific task. Given a high- level program and an area constraint, our software considers different granular ...

The growth and the operation of all living beings are directed through the intepretation, in each of their cells, of a chemical program, the DNA. This program, called genome, is the blueprint of the organism and consists of a sequence of four discrete characters: A, C, G, and T. This process is the source of inspiration for the Embryonics (embryological electronics) project, whose final objective is the conception of very large scale integrated circuits endowed with properties usually associated with the li

As new techniques for applying biological processes to the development of computer hardware reach maturity, the EMBRYONICS (for embryonic electronics) project gains in complexity and flexibility of use. New features, such as the capability to more efficiently store data, have lately been added to MUXTREE® (for multiplexer tree) - our electronic molecule. A side effect to the flexibility added to the new molecule is the need for different binary configurations in order to differentiate the possible operating

In this article, we introduce the approach to the realization of ontogenetic development and fault tolerance that will be implemented in the POEtic tissue, a novel reconfigurable digital circuit dedicated to the realization of bio-inspired systems. The modelization in electronic hardware of the developmental process of multi-cellular biological organisms is an approach that could become extremely useful in the implementation of highly complex systems, where concepts such as self-organization and fault tolera

This article describes the addition to the von Neumann cellular automaton of the Tom Thumb Algorithm, a mechanism developed for the self-replication of multi-processor systems. Except for the cell construction process, every functionality of the original CA has been preserved in our new system. Moreover, the Tom Thumb Algorithm now allows the replication of any structure within the von Neumann environment, whatever its number of cells may be.
