In a context of political commitment targeting net zero in 2050, controlling carbon flows is an essential operational imperative. The LOCUS methodology (Low carbon urban strategy) makes it possible to establish an exhaustive vision of carbon flows at neigh ...

The Swisswoodhouse concept was born out of the crossover of several lines of thought concerning issues of urban densification, flexibility of housing, adaptability of buildings and sustainable construction. The approach aims to provide an alternative to th ...

We present an application of the operational monitoring tool SIPRIUS+ to an ongoing case study representative of urban brownfield regeneration projects: the Pôle Viotte neighbourhood, located in Besançon (France). We start with a description of the brownfi ...

PV installations on flat roofs offer a wide range of design options, which are usually neglected in urban-scale assessments as these typically assume horizontal or other fixed arrangements. In this study, we analyse the influence of common design parameter ...

The increasing importance of sustainability in town planning and architectural design is strongly questioning the actual logic of built environment dispersion. The peripheral extension of cities is indeed leading to irrational uses of ground, growing environmental impacts and important infrastructural costs. Looked at from that point of view, the goal of the Ecoparc project is the regeneration of an urban wasteland, located next to the station of Neuchâtel (Switzerland). Associating notably sustainable arch

In Switzerland, as in many European countries, new energy directives focus on decreasing the carbon footprint of buildings by promoting passive and active energy strategies and systems. Among the latter, Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), which function both as envelope materials and electricity producers, are rapidly improving their performance. However, their potential remains largely unrealized due to diverse barriers. Among them, the poor expressive qualities of many BIPV products are preventing

Although the integration of PV systems in the building envelope (BIPV) is an important factor for the acceptability of such installations, current urban-scale solar potential metrics only partially consider this aspect. As part of the definition of BIPV-su ...

Regeneration of disused urban areas, such as industrial brownfields or abandoned infrastructural zones, has received considerable attention in the context of post‐industrial European cities. Due to the inherent complexity of these projects, a holistic inte ...

Brownfield is a polysemic notion that encompasses a whole range of diverse spaces. Although there is no official definition at the European level, an emerging consensus has arisen around the urban character of brownfields and the need for intervention. Ind ...

We describe a methodology to parametrically generate several neighborhood design variants based on a master plan and comparatively evaluate their performance in terms of passive and active solar potential. Two case studies in Yverdon-les-Bains and Lausanne (CH) are presented.

Urban densification issues are one of the key challenges for most European cities. In this context, the vertical extension of existing buildings provides a solution to create usable spaces without wasting additional land. Little attention has been given to ...

A l'inverse, notre s ...

We previously identified that urban brownfield regeneration projects are relevant strategies to limit urban sprawl while revitalizing portions of cities, namely mixed-use neighbourhoods. Moreover, these neighbourhoods in transition are opportunities to fos ...

Product of a research cooperation between three Swiss universities - The Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne's school of Architecture, the School of Architecture and Technology in Fribourg, and the University of Fribourg - the Smart Living Lab is a research and development center for the built environment of the future. This high-tech structure also serves as an emblem of the cooperation's aim to translate academic research into actual buildings. A new series of books, entitled Towards 2050 will be sho

The GREEN DENSITY transdisciplinary research and teaching project focuses on the Waldstadt sector, a strip of forest bordering the city of Bern. This strategic site, likely to host new inhabitants and jobs close to public transport, is particularly adapted ...
