Research at the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) at EPFL aims to explore the interactions between architectural design and transitions towards sustainability in the built environment. This concerns as much the polycentric rest ...

As of 2020, every new building in the European Union will have to reach the nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) performance. However, building nZEB will not be sufficient to reach carbon neutrality in 2050 as required by the last IPCC report: indeed, even n ...

In view of the importance of urban renewal processes, building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems can potentially provide a crucial response to the energy turnaround challenges. Functioning both as envelope material and electricity generator, they can ...

Many municipalities and public authorities have supported the creation of solar cadastres to map the solar energy-generation potential of existing buildings. Despite advancements in modelling solar potential, most of these tools provide simple evaluations ...

The increasing interest in solar energy production in urban areas requires an accurate simulation of solar irradiation on building surfaces, including vertical surfaces. However, solar potential analyses are usually conducted on 2.5D models, which are limi ...

In view of the importance of urban renewal processes, building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems can potentially provide a crucial response to the challenges of the energy turnaround. Functioning both as envelope material and electricity generator, they can simultaneously reduce the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions while providing savings in materials and electricity costs. These are precisely the objectives of most European energy directives, from zero- to positive-energy build

Urban morphology, including building typology and layout, has a significant influence on the built environment’s access to the sun, which impacts its energy exchange with the environment. This energy exchange is a strong factor in determining the comfort l ...

This paper investigates the theoretical capacity of the Swiss peri-urban dwelling stock to meet energy efficiency requirements through incremental scenarios. The notion of “typical dwelling” allows the assessment of housing energy efficiency at the country ...

Peri-urban neighborhoods of detached houses are facing countless challenges related to the building stock’s low energy efficiency, to the current demographic transition reducing household size and increasing the proportion of elderlies, to their distant lo ...

The increasing importance of sustainability in urban and architectural design is strongly questioning the actual logic of built environment dispersion. In this context, the regeneration of urban wastelands constitutes an important potential for urban densification and city revitalization. The concrete integration of sustainability in this process requires an approach that is based on the optimization of multiple criteria. Numerous sources describe this objective in theoretical terms, but an operational asse

The energy performance of a building is strongly influenced by its level of solar exposure, in turn affected by the climate, built context, and building morphological characteristics. Since these are typically fixed at the early- design phase, performance ...

Two pairs of identical experimentation modules are being developed within the framework of a collaborative initiative named NOMAD – Network of Optimization Modalities in Architectural Design - between the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID) and the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST), both at EPFL. NOMAD relates to a series of projects related to the optimization of the building envelope in a sustainability context. Based on comparative evaluation

The paper outlines the theoretical context and preliminary outputs of the investigation on the prospective evolution of existing peri-urban neighborhoods of single-family houses toward lower carbon and more resilient communities, for 2050, in Switzerland. ...

Sloping sites are especially appealing for habitat due to climatic, safety, or landscape factors. These benefits, which compensate for the construction effort required to build in such areas, have favored the urbanization of the hillsides throughout history. With the rise of private cars, the accessibility of urban hills has increased, mostly leading to a loose colonization by detached and privileged houses. At a time of climate emergency, the continuation of urban sprawl is strongly questioned. Urban regen

The urban sprawl that characterizes most European cities relies highly on the use of private motor vehicle. As a result, there is a prominent increase in the energy consumption of the built environment. Therefore, the densification of existing urban areas ...

In most European countries, new energy directives on building performance have been developed as a consequence of unsustainable greenhouse gas emissions. These norms promote active and passive energy strategies to lower the environmental impact of the buil ...

The Symbiotic Districts research project examines dimensions influencing energy self-sufficiency at neighborhood scale by integrating parameters related to buildings, infrastructure, mobility, food, goods and services. Transposing industrial ecology tools ...

In Switzerland, as in many European countries, new energy directives focus on decreasing the carbon footprint of buildings by promoting passive and active energy strategies and systems. Among the latter, Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), which func ...
