The specification of complex signal processing systems in hardware by means of HDL is no longer the appropriate way since they are known to be time consuming to design, and less flexible to extend features. Recently, \CAL dataflow language was specified to ...

This paper presents an energy-efficient analog front-end circuit to monitor the pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) with piezoresistive pressure sensors. A low-power capacitively-coupled instrumentation amplifier (CCIA) is developed in order to boost the ampli ...

The natural representation of data streams, parallelism, and composition has made dataflow an attractive programming model for expressing a wide range of stream and media processing applications, and has led MPEG and ISO to base their latest video coding standards on this model. This paper describes and compares methodologies and metrics for the optimization of signal processing algorithms represented as dataflow programs. Our approach is based on the analysis of traces and addresses some of the complexity

Most of music related tasks need a joint time-because a music signal varies with time. The existing time-frequency analysis approaches show some serious limitations for application in music signal processing. This paper presents an original frequency-dependent time-frequency analysis tool called the Resonator Time-Frequency Image (RTFI). The RTFI is implemented by a first-order complex resonator bank so as to be computation-efficient. Different music analysis tasks may have different time-frequency resoluti

New generations of multi-core processors and reconfigurable hardware platforms are expected to provide a dramatic increase of processing capabilities. However, one obstacle for exploiting all the promises of such new platforms is the legacy of current appl ...

One of the problems proven to be NP-hard in the field of many-core architectures is the partitioning of stream programs. In order to maximize the execution parallelism and obtain the maximal data throughput for a streaming application it is essential to fi ...

This paper presents a new approach to buffer dimensioning for dynamic dataflow implementations. A novel transformation applied to the execution trace graph of a dataflow program is introduced in order to generate an event driven system. It is shown how model predictive control theory techniques can be applied to such a system to analyse the execution space of a dataflow program and to define and to minimize a bounded buffer size configuration that corresponds to a deadlock free execution. Some experimental

The implementation of processing platforms supporting multiple applications by runtime reconfigurations on dedicated hardware modules requires the solution of different problems. These problems are notably not-trivial since both platform and application co ...

After several generations of video coding standards, MPEG High Efficient Video Coding (HEVC) is likely to emerge as the video coding standards for HD and Ultra-HD TV. HEVC decoding is expected to be less computationally demanding and to provide a higher le ...

The main objective of the MPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) standard is to establish a framework for a more flexible usage of standard video coding technology. The framework not only supports multiple standards and new coding configurations, but also provides an incremental and modular approach to innovation in video compression development and design. This paper provides an overview of the main objectives of RVC, standard accompanied with a presentation of the components of the framework for both norm

The intrinsic high entropy metadata, known as quality scores, are largely the cause of the substantial size of sequence data files. Yet, there is no consensus on a viable reduction of the resolution of the quality score scale, arguably because of collatera ...

Developing and fine-tuning software programs for heterogeneous hardware such as CPU/GPU processing platforms comprise a highly complex endeavor that demands considerable time and effort of software engineers and requires evaluating various fundamental comp ...

This paper describes an image acquisition and a processing system based on a new coprocessor architecture designed for CMOS sensor imaging. The system exploits the full potential CMOS selective access imaging technology because the coprocessor unit is inte ...

This paper provides an overview of the rationale of the Reconfigurable Media Coding framework developed by MPEG standardization committee to overcome the limits of traditional ways of providing decoder specifications. Such framework is an extension of the ...

In 2004, ISO/IEC SC29 better known as MPEG started a new standard initiative aiming at facilitating the deployment of multi-format video codec design and to enable the possibility of reconfiguring video codecs using a library of standard components. The ne ...

Dataflow process networks provide a versatile model of computation for specifying signal processing applications in a platform independent fashion. This attractive feature of dataflow has lately been realized in dataflow programming tools that allow synthe ...

Current multimedia design processes suffer from the excessively large time spent on testing new IP-blocks with references based on large video encoders specifications (usually several thousands lines of code). The appropriate testing of a single IP-block m ...

Writing and optimizing application software for heterogeneous platforms including GPU units is a very difficult task that requires designer efforts and resources to consider several key elements to obtain good performance. Dataflow programming has shown to ...

The recent MPEG Reconfigurable Media Coding (RMC) standard aims at defining media processing specifications (e.g. video codecs) in a form that abstracts from the implementation platform, but at the same time is an appropriate starting point for implementat ...

MPEG High Efficient Video Coding (HEVC) is likely to emerge as the video coding standard for HD and Ultra-HD TV resolutions. The two elements that push HEVC beyond the previous standards are a higher compression efficiency of about a factor of two, and the ...
