Atrial arrhythmias are the most frequent rhythm disorders in humans and often lead to severe complications such as heart failure and stroke. While different mapping techniques have provided significant information on the electrophysiological processes associated with atrial fibrillation (AF), the mechanisms underlying AF initiation and maintenance remain unclear. Hence the treatment of atrial arrhythmias is still based on empirical considerations. To assist the study of the complex spatio-temporal dynamics

The steady states of the Fenton–Karma, the Courtemanche and the Nygren cell models were studied by determining the fixed points of the dynamical system describing their cell kinetics. The linear stability of the fixed points was investigated, as well as th ...

Quantifying the role of atrial ectopic foci in the initiation and the maintenance of atrial fibrillation (AF) is a relevant clinical problem. This study aims at assessing the relation between the activity level of an ectopic focus and the complexity of the ...

Objective: The objective of the study was to design a lead system aimed at studying atrial fibrillation (AF), while being anchored to the standard 12-lead system. Methods: The location of 4 of the 6 precordial electrodes was optimized while leaving the rem ...

Objective: To design a VCG lead system dedicated to the analysis of atrial fibrillation. Methods: Body surface potentials during atrial fibrillation were simulated by using a biophysical model of the human atria and thorax. The XYZ components of the equivalent dipole were derived from the Gabor-Nelson equations. These served as the gold standard while searching for methods for the derivation of the vectorcardiogram from a limited number of electrode positions and their transfer coefficients. Six electrode c

The research discussed in this article is motivated by the search for an optimal classification of the different types of atrial fibrillation (AF) on the basis of recorded atrial signals. This would facilitate the selection of an optimal therapy. This arti ...

The membrane kinetics of human atrial myocytes as formulated by Courtemance, Ramierz and Nattel has been studied while focusing on its progression toward stationary solutions during long term repetitive stimulation. An algorithm is presented for finding th ...
