The 3rd correction of the Rhone River (R3) is the largest flood protection project in Switzerland so far. Covering a length of 162 km, it aims to protect some 100,000 people and prevent flood damages, which could raise up to 10 billion CHF for major events ...

In this study, the effect of spilling from neighboring sluice gates on stop-logs was experimentally investigated on a 1:65 physical scale model comprised of a double arch dam, a reservoir area, six spillway orifices and two stop-logs. Two types of measurem ...

Y-shape outlet structures are used to release the turbine water into a reservoir. Classical design oftenuses a Y-shape over a certain length and with a specific opening angle. Depending on the geometry, especially in turbine mode, significant undesired flow ...

Uncontrolled scour is affecting multiple mobile dams. The plunge pool of the Chancy-Pougny barrage, located on the Rhone River bordering France and Switzerland, has recently been reported to develop in a potentially unfavourable direction after almost 100 ...

Abstract: Within the framework of the Snowy 2.0 large-scale pumped-storage facility project in Australia, hybrid experimental and numerical modeling of Tantangara (upper reservoir) and Talbingo (lower reservoir) intake/outlet structure were carried out. Th ...

Nowadays, high-head power plants could increase their installed power capacity for many reasons, e.g. dam heightening, increase of their peak power capacity or refurbishment with new turbines. Frequently, due to several considerations, e.g. topographical o ...

In this study, we map different types of channel geomorphic units in a sediment-starved, residual-flow reach before and after an artificial flood. Bedload particles of a previous sediment augmentation measure are tracked with passive integrated transponder ...

To address the global loss of biodiversity in freshwater environments, understanding river habitat requirements for key species, such as brown trout (Salmo trutta L.), is crucial. The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) aids ecologists in identifying preferred ...

Within the frame of the Third Rhône Correction, the river bend in Martigny is considered a top priority measure for flood protection. During the preliminary project, physical and numerical modeling tests were considered necessary. For the latter, the softw ...

The dataset compiles flume experiments on contraction scour reported in the literature. Data that were previously published only as tables within individual articles have been collected and standardized into a uniform format. The objective is to improve open access to experimental results that are already available in published studies. The tab "Database" contain the compile dataset of previous studies. The tabs with the name of the authors present the original data and some comments on why some data are n

Low velocity and shallow-depth flow fields often are a challenge to most velocity measuring instruments. In the framework of a research project on reservoir sedimentation, the influence of the reservoir geometry on sediment transport and deposition was stu ...

Reservoir sedimentation is one of the main challenges in the sustainable operation of large reservoirs because it causes volume loss, affecting hydropower production capacity, dam safety, and flood management. To ensure the sustainability of deep reservoir ...

Numerical modeling of sediment transport in reservoirs, especially for sudden events such as flushing, is still a challenging research topic. In the present study, sediment transport and sediment flushing are simulated for a Peruvian reservoir. Situated in ...

Hydropower plays a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of Bhutan where water resource is abundantly available and therefore several hydropower plants are being planned and a few under construction. However, with the presence of several potential ...

Geomembrane systems have been used at hydropower plants as rehabilitation and mitigation technology for several decades and are now used worldwide. In the context of planning an energy transition that promotes the sustainable use of water resources for ene ...

The regulation of discharge and the retention of sediments in reservoirs disturb the natural water dynamics in residual flow stretches below reservoirs. However, a dynamic river morphology as well as near-natural hydrological hydrographs are fundamental ...

Since its inauguration, in 1993, the horizontal weir crest of the Olympic fountain in Lausanne has suffered from differential settlings leading to a difference in level of more than 30 mm. The settling involves a visible non-uniform discharge distribution ...

Flume experiments are conducted to model sediment-laden density currents with continuous suspension supply. The initial density covers 1008, 1016, and 1032 kg/m3 and the bottom slope at 5.0 %. Sediment deposition profiles along the experimental flume are measured using an electrical resistance-based depositometer (ERBD). The measurement technique is described, its calibration procedure is presented and results shown. The discussion highlights the influence of the initial turbidity currents density respectiv

Based on the Water Protection Act of 2013, severe issues caused by the rapid change of water discharge (hydropeaking) must be reduced by operators of hydroelectric power plants in Switzerland. Therefore, a new generation of regulating basins is under construction. In Tesin, the Ritom hydroelectric power plant, constructed in 1921, will be modernized. The project includes a new powerhouse with three machine groups. A compensation basin with a volume of 100’000 m3 is planned in order to minimize the effects o

The Third Correction of the Rhone River in Switzerland will implement approximately 120 km of restoration measures to reduce flood risks and improve ecological conditions including a combination of river channel widening and river bed lowering. The river c ...
