A turbidity current is a particle-laden current driven by density differences due to suspended sediment particles. Turbidity currents can transport large amounts of sediment down slopes over great distances, and play a significant role in fluvial, lake and ...

Reservoir sedimentation is a key challenge for storage sustainability because it causes volume loss, affecting hydropower production capacity, dam safety, and flood management. A preliminary EPFL study proposed and studied an innovative device (called SEDM ...

In laboratory experiments, the influence of inflow and outflow sequences on the behavior of fine sediment was investigated. The experimental set-up consisted of two interconnected rectangular basins, between which water was moved back and forth. Suspended ...

This work presents a study of two-phase flow generated inside a rock-flow cell setup. It is characterized by a pipe section filled with fluid (oil in our studies) that is put into oscillation around its mass centre by an electric motor. This type of appara ...

Sediment transport in geophysical boundary layer flows has relevance to a broad spectrum of sciences ranging from the physical and chemical, to the biological, ecological and geological. Advances in sediment transport modelling and prediction strongly suff ...

Local scouring is a leading cause of bridge collapses. To protect bridges against local scouring, different countermeasures have been proposed and tested in the literature. In this study, the performance of collars was evaluated for scour reduction at two ...

In intake mode, the primary concerns are preventing sediment ingress into the waterways and mitigating vortex formation. Sediment intrusion can lead to erosion, blockage, and reduced turbine efficiency, while vortex formation can lead to entrainment of air, ice, or debris, pressure fluctuations, and potential risk of cavitation. • In outlet mode, key challenges include managing high velocities at the rack section, minimizing head losses, and ensuring proper jet diffusion to avoid local erosion and slope sta

Local river widening aims to reduce the flood risk and enable the self-morphodynamic development of the river. However, a large amount of transported sediments settles due to the flow velocity reduction in the widening. Assessing the flow and the grain mot ...

We present a simple, vertically-explicit 2D model of river bank erosion that also takes the effect of sediment stabilization by plant roots into account. The model is solved in quasi-analytical form for an exemplary non-stationary hydrograph temporal signa ...

Heightening very high gravity dams is one of the solutions considered as part of the energy transition and to mitigate the effects of climate change. The paper presents a stepwise approach to assess the potential for dam heightening and its impact on the h ...

River bank (RB) erosion is a global issue aecting livelihoods and properties of millions of people. However, it has not received enough attention in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), i.e., the world’s third largest delta, compared to salinity intrusion an ...

A turbidity current is a turbulent, particle-laden gravity current that is driven by density differences resulting from the presence of suspended sediment particles. The current travels downslope, bearing a large amount of sediment over a great distance, a ...

Many species living in the hyporheic zone of rivers, such as fishes and benthos, are sensitive to the excessive presence of fine sediment. These particles tend to reduce the connectivity between the hyporheic zone and the surface flow by filling the pore a ...

This study is within the frame of the construction of the rail link between Geneva Cornavin station, Eaux-Vives station and Annemasse (CEVA). The project area is located at a cut-and-cover tunnel built by slurry walls located in the alluvium of the Foron R ...

Soil andwater bioengineering is a technology that encourages scientists and practitioners to combine their knowledge and skills in the management of ecosystems with a common goal to maximize benefits to both man and the natural environment. It involves tec ...

The formation of free surface vortices at intakes results in air entrainment into the headrace system of hydropower plants. This reduces efficiency, may damage turbines and pumps, and increases the likelihood of transient phenomena in pressurized waterways. To prevent these losses and damages, operators of hydropower plants maintain a minimum submergence level above the intake. As a result, a significant part of storage volume is not usable leading to lower energy storage capacity and income. In this study,

It is a complex task to evaluate the effects of a river rehabilitation measure on the riverscape’s habitat mosaic. This study investigated the medium term effects of a rehabilitation measure in a residual flow reach downstream of a hydroelectric dam. The r ...

Altered river reaches are causing important loss in freshwater biodiversity and habitat availability. To face this problem, river restorations are gaining increasing importance in the scientific community, leading to the need for better and more precise tools able to predict and evaluate the outcomes of these measures in terms of both habitat quality and fish population responses. This study presents a method to determine the improvement in habitat quality for different brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) life st

Reservoirs represent an important source of energy that should be preserved and sustained. However, the lifetime of reservoirs is being reduced due to natural processes such as sedimentation. To face this problem, different sediment mitigation techniques a ...

Estuarine environments, as dynamic low-lying transition zones between rivers and the open sea, are vulnerable to sea level rise (SLR). To evaluate the potential impacts of SLR on estuarine responses, it is necessary to examine the altered tidal dynamics, i ...
