This study is within the frame of the construction of the rail link between Geneva Cornavin station, Eaux-Vives station and Annemasse (CEVA). The project area is located at a cut-and-cover tunnel built by slurry walls located in the alluvium of the Foron R ...

In light of Switzerland’s 2050 energy goals, the nation aims to boost its domestic hydroelectric output, notably focusing on small-scale hydroelectric power plants. Concurrently, there is an effort to renovate hydroelectric plants to make them more environ ...

The Swiss confederation aims to phase out nuclear power production with its Energy Strategy 2050 program by increasing the renewable energy contribution to its overall energy generation. Hydroelectricity, which is the most important form of renewable energ ...

The interdisciplinary project Resilient Rivers links research in hydraulic engineering and ecology to explore processes and to evaluate measures related to river restoration. The partners from four different Swiss research institutions together with the ...

In the last decades, soil bioengineering has gained considerable popularity worldwide, especially in hillslope, riverbank, and earth embankment stabilisation works. The use of plants as a building material transfers the plant multifunctionality within engi ...

Increasing meteorological data availability and quality implies an adaptation of the interpolation methods for data combination. In this paper, we propose a new method to efficiently combine weather radar data with data from two heated rain gauge networks ...

Reservoir sedimentation is considered as a sustainability problem. A concept getting down to the root of the cause was developed and tested in laboratory experiments. The idea is to maintain sediment in suspension, i.e., avoiding its settling near the dam ...

An artificial floods program has been implemented on the Sarine residual flow reach, downstream of the Rossens dam. Two artificial floods were released in 2016 (coupled with sediment augmentation) and in 2020. A natural flood occurred in 2021. The indicato ...

In the canton of Bern, Switzerland, the “Le Bez” torrent is known for its flash floods, causing sediment and wood debris buildup in Villeret village settled on the alluvial fan. To mitigate this issue, a sediment/wood trap system is being implemented upstr ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss–French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its commissioning, the operation of the four spillway gates has been responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. The future scour potentia ...

Particle-laden flows or turbidity currents along the seafloor are important to the formation and erosion of submarine topography. To understand the mass-transport process, flume tests were carried out with a continuous supply of quartz-laden suspension. Th ...

The papers present three innovative solutions for fine sediment manage- ments in seasonal reservoirs, which are at different stages of maturity. Operational reservoir stirring using jet-like inflows may facilitate sediment routing, at no addi- tional cost ...

Due to the increasing production of volatile new renewable energies as solar and wind, storage hydropower plants have to operate under harsh operation conditions in order to stabilize the electricity grid. As a result, highly transient water pressures occu ...

Reservoir sedimentation is a key challenge for storage sustainability because it causes volume loss, affecting hydropower production capacity, dam safety, and flood management. A preliminary EPFL study proposed and studied an innovative device (called SEDM ...

In order to increase the installed capacity, the refurbishment of Gondo high-head power plant required a modification of the existing surge tank by installing a throttle at its entrance. In a previous study, the geometry of this throttle was optimized by p ...

The Le Bez torrent in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, is known for flashy and violent floods due to its watershed topography and vegetation conditions. Such floods can bring a substantial amount of sediment and wood into the small downstream village of Vi ...

Artificial water storage, originated by the construction of dams, is essential for the sustainable health and welfare of civilizations since it supplies water for human consumption, irrigation and energy production. Furthermore, dam reservoirs are used for ...

Pump and turbine operations lead to head losses in the tailrace channel. Pumping discharge may be limited due to potential air entrainment into the pump shaft when the downstream reservoir is at its lowest level and the head losses are too high. Regarding ...

Reservoir sedimentation is an ongoing issue, which endangers the sustainability of reservoirs. As well as reducing the capacity of a reservoir, sedimentation causes damage to hydraulic structures such as turbine intakes and bottom outlets. In addition, downstream problems related to the river’s ecosystem are also observed. Venting turbidity currents is one method for managing sedimentation problems. This paper presents the main conditions for venting, as well as examining its application and efficiency in v

Glacier retreat in the Alps has dramatically progressed since the 1980s due to climate change, and glacier shrinkage will be even more pronounced in the future. As a result, the flow regime and the sediment yield from watersheds will be subject to significant changes. Reservoirs are exposed to continuous sedimentation, reducing their storage volume and posing exploitation and security risks. The methodology is mainly based on literature review, combining various sources and datasets in order to answer the t
