This lecture introduces the Rouse model as a physical description of viscoelasticity in polymers, discussing its limitations related to entanglement. It covers topics such as the origin of universal power laws, entanglement network formation, reptation, dynamics of isolated chains in a solvent, quantification of elastic force, time-dependent response of molten polymer chains, and the Rouse model for unentangled polymers. The practicality of the Rouse model in describing polymer melts, Rouse modes characterizing polymer motion, Rouse relaxation, assumptions of the model, and its limitations are also discussed.
