Description

This lecture covers advanced topics in probability theory, including Markov's and Chebyshev's inequalities, Bernoulli trials, binomial distribution, and geometric distribution. Examples are provided to illustrate the concepts and calculations involved in determining probabilities and expectations.

Karl Aberer

Karl Aberer received his PhD in mathematics in 1991 from the ETH Zürich. From 1991 to 1992 he was postdoctoral fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1992, he joined the Integrated Publication and Information Systems institute (IPSI) of GMD in Germany, where he was leading the research division Open Adaptive Information Management Systems. In 2000 he joined EPFL as full professor. Since 2005 he is the director of the Swiss National Research Center for Mobile Information and Communication Systems ( NCCR-MICS, www.mics.ch ). He is member of the editorial boards of VLDB Journal, ACM Transaction on Autonomous and Adaptive Systems and World Wide Web Journal. He has been consulting for the Swiss government in research and science policy as a member of the Swiss Research and Technology Council ( SWTR ) from 2003 - 2011.

Beta negative binomial distribution

In probability theory, a beta negative binomial distribution is the probability distribution of a discrete random variable equal to the number of failures needed to get successes in a sequence of independent Bernoulli trials. The probability of success on each trial stays constant within any given experiment but varies across different experiments following a beta distribution. Thus the distribution is a compound probability distribution.

Probability interpretations

The word probability has been used in a variety of ways since it was first applied to the mathematical study of games of chance. Does probability measure the real, physical, tendency of something to occur, or is it a measure of how strongly one believes it will occur, or does it draw on both these elements? In answering such questions, mathematicians interpret the probability values of probability theory. There are two broad categories of probability interpretations which can be called "physical" and "evidential" probabilities.

Geometric distribution

In probability theory and statistics, the geometric distribution is either one of two discrete probability distributions: The probability distribution of the number X of Bernoulli trials needed to get one success, supported on the set ; The probability distribution of the number Y = X − 1 of failures before the first success, supported on the set . Which of these is called the geometric distribution is a matter of convention and convenience. These two different geometric distributions should not be confused with each other.
