This lecture introduces data stream processing, focusing on the concepts, tools, and challenges involved. It covers the difference between batch and stream processing, the importance of stream processing for real-time insights, and applications in various industries such as log analysis, fraud detection, and predictive maintenance. The lecture also discusses related concepts like event time vs processing time, window operations, and stateful vs stateless operations. Tools like Kafka and Spark Streaming are explored, along with practical exercises on setting up Kafka, producing and consuming messages, and visualizing data streams.

I received my Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering from Universidad Catolica Boliviana, Bolivia in 2008 and Master's degree in Computer Science, specialization Foundations of Software from EPFL in 2012.

Data processing

Data processing is the collection and manipulation of digital data to produce meaningful information. Data processing is a form of information processing, which is the modification (processing) of information in any manner detectable by an observer. The term "Data Processing", or "DP" has also been used to refer to a department within an organization responsible for the operation of data processing programs. Data processing may involve various processes, including: Validation – Ensuring that supplied data is correct and relevant.

Scientific visualization

Scientific visualization (also spelled scientific visualisation) is an interdisciplinary branch of science concerned with the visualization of scientific phenomena. It is also considered a subset of computer graphics, a branch of computer science. The purpose of scientific visualization is to graphically illustrate scientific data to enable scientists to understand, illustrate, and glean insight from their data.

Data Preprocessing

Data preprocessing can refer to manipulation or dropping of data before it is used in order to ensure or enhance performance, and is an important step in the data mining process. The phrase "garbage in, garbage out" is particularly applicable to data mining and machine learning projects. Data collection methods are often loosely controlled, resulting in out-of-range values, impossible data combinations, and missing values, amongst other issues. Analyzing data that has not been carefully screened for such problems can produce misleading results.
