Downloading and Interacting with Single Cell Models

Description

This lecture covers the process of downloading and interacting with single cell models, starting with importing Python packages for visualization and analysis, downloading a Neocortical Layer 5 Thick Tufted Pyramidal cell model, extracting the model files, compiling NEURON simulator mechanisms, and visualizing the cell morphology using NeuroM. The lecture also explains how to initialize the model by loading the 'init.hoc' file, create a cell with synapses, and inject a step current into the neuron's soma.

Neuroscience

It addresses the questions of how cognitive activities are affected or controlled by neural circuits in the brain. Cognitive neuroscience is a branch of both neuroscience and psychology, overlapping with disciplines such as behavioral neuroscience, cognitive psychology, physiological psychology and affective neuroscience.

Cell culture

Cell culture or tissue culture is the process by which cells are grown under controlled conditions, generally outside of their natural environment. The term "tissue culture" was coined by American pathologist Montrose Thomas Burrows. This technique is also called micropropagation. After the cells of interest have been isolated from living tissue, they can subsequently be maintained under carefully controlled conditions. They need to be kept at body temperature (37 °C) in an incubator.

Single-unit recording

In neuroscience, single-unit recordings (also, single-neuron recordings) provide a method of measuring the electro-physiological responses of a single neuron using a microelectrode system. When a neuron generates an action potential, the signal propagates down the neuron as a current which flows in and out of the cell through excitable membrane regions in the soma and axon. A microelectrode is inserted into the brain, where it can record the rate of change in voltage with respect to time.
