Robert Dalang

Robert Dalang, né en 1961, a reçu le diplôme de Mathématicien-EPFL en 1983 et est lauréat du Prix Dommer. Il passe l'année 1985-86 à Cornell University (USA) comme chercheur invité. Il obtient le doctorat au Département de mathématiques de l'EPFL en 1987. Son domaine de spécialisation est la théorie des processeurs stochastiques. En 1987, Robert Dalang est nommé professeur assistant au Département de statistiques de l'Université de Californie à Berkeley (USA). En 1988, il reçoit une bourse post-doctorale du Fonds national scientifique américain et effectue des recherches sur les propriétés markoviennes de processus stochastiques à plusieurs paramètres. En 1990, il est nommé à Tufts University (Boston, USA). Il est promu professeur associé en mai 1993. Une partie importante de ses recherches se font dans le cadre de contrats avec le Fonds national scientifique américain et l'Office de la recherche de l'armée américaine. En collaboration avec le Prof. R. Cairoli du Département de mathématiques de l'EPFL, il a écrit un livre sur l'optimisation stochastique séquentielle publié en 1996 aux éditions John Wiley. M. Dalang est nommé professeur extraordinaire de probabilités au Département de mathématiques en 1995. Il y poursuit des travaux de recherche en processus stochastiques et probabilité appliquée et participe à l'enseignement des processus stochastiques, de la théorie des probabilités et des cours de mathématiques aux sections d'ingénieurs. Il dirige régulièrement des thèses de doctorats, est éditeur de plusieurs journaux de recherche mathématique et travail en collaboration avec des chercheurs de plusieurs universités européennes et américaines.

Thomas Mountford

D'origine britannique, né en 1961. Il a reçu la bourse présidentielle des jeunes investisseurs (Presidential Young Investigator Grant) en 1990 et le prix de la Fraternité Sloan (Sloan Fellowship) en 1991. Son travail montre que les valeurs critiques d'une classe large de de systèmes de particules proches sont égales à 1, et que, suite à plusieurs travaux sur la trajectoire du mouvement brownien, incluant une simulation numérique, le nombre d'îlots browniens en 2 dimensions tend vers l'infini quand leurs tailles tendent vers 0. Il reçoit le prix Rosenbaum en 1993 lui ouvrant ainsi les portes du Isaac Newton Institute à Cambridge. Il est également décoré par le prix Rollo Davidson en 1995 et nommé membre honoraire de l'Institute of Mathematical Statistics en 2001. Socialist calculation debate

The socialist calculation debate, sometimes known as the economic calculation debate, was a discourse on the subject of how a socialist economy would perform economic calculation given the absence of the law of value, money, financial prices for capital goods and private ownership of the means of production. More specifically, the debate was centered on the application of economic planning for the allocation of the means of production as a substitute for capital markets and whether or not such an arrangement would be superior to capitalism in terms of efficiency and productivity.

Calculation in kind

NOTOC Calculation in kind or calculation in-natura is a way of valuating resources and a system of accounting that uses disaggregated physical magnitudes as opposed to a common unit of calculation. As the basis for a socialist economy, it was proposed to replace money and financial calculation. In an in-kind economy products are produced for their use values (their utility) and accounted in physical terms. By contrast, in money-based economies, commodities are produced for their exchange value and accounted in monetary terms.

Economic calculation problem

The economic calculation problem (sometimes abbreviated ECP) is a criticism of using economic planning as a substitute for market-based allocation of the factors of production. It was first proposed by Ludwig von Mises in his 1920 article "Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth" and later expanded upon by Friedrich Hayek. In his first article, Mises described the nature of the price system under capitalism and described how individual subjective values (while criticizing other theories of value) are translated into the objective information necessary for rational allocation of resources in society.

Mathematics

Mathematics is an area of knowledge that includes the topics of numbers, formulas and related structures, shapes and the spaces in which they are contained, and quantities and their changes. These topics are represented in modern mathematics with the major subdisciplines of number theory, algebra, geometry, and analysis, respectively. There is no general consensus among mathematicians about a common definition for their academic discipline. Most mathematical activity involves the discovery of properties of abstract objects and the use of pure reason to prove them.

Although research into mathematics education is primarily concerned with the tools, methods, and approaches that facilitate practice or the study of practice, it also covers an extensive field of study encompassing a variety of different concepts, theories and methods.
