Mission
Extreme environments are particularly sensitive to climate change and are transforming at accelerated rates. This can have important global repercussions. EERL aims to create integrated process understanding by investigating interactions between the atmosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, ocean, land and anthroposphere. The goal is to characterize climate-change relevant and vertically-resolved processes that are d

Philippe ThalmannPhilippe Thalmann was born in Lausanne in 1963. He graduated in Economics from the University of Lausanne in 1984, where he earned a postgraduate diploma in Economics in 1986. Mr. Thalmann entered the doctoral program in Economics of Harvard University (Cambridge, U.S.A.) in 1986, which he completed with a Ph.D. in 1990. His dissertation is entitled: "Essays in the Economics of Government Revenues and Spending". Returning to Switzerland, he was hired as an assistant professor first at the University of Geneva (teachings in Public Economics), then at the University of Lausanne (teachings in Econometrics and Introductory Economics). Since 1994, Mr. Thalmann is associate professor of Economics as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne.

Natacha PascheDr. Natacha Tofield Pasche is a limnologist with strong interests in biogeochemical processes in lakes. Environmental Engineer from EPFL, she accomplished her PhD on nutrient cycling and methane production in Lake Kivu. From 2009 to 2013, she worked for the Government of Rwanda to create a monitoring program on Lake Kivu, to check the impacts from methane extraction plants. Since September 2013, she is the Deputy Director of the Center of Limnology at EPFL. She coordinated the science, logistic of expeditions and finances of two large research projects. The first one aimed at mapping water quality using innovative aerial images, and the second investigated the life under ice in Lake Onego. As project leader, she managed the creation of LéXPLORE platform, that collects innovative and high-frequency data on Lake Leman, and coordinates the different research projects.
David Atienza AlonsoDavid Atienza Alonso is an associate professor of EE and director of the Embedded Systems Laboratory (ESL) at EPFL, Switzerland. He received his MSc and PhD degrees in computer science and engineering from UCM, Spain, and IMEC, Belgium, in 2001 and 2005, respectively. His research interests include system-level design methodologies for multi-processor system-on-chip (MPSoC) servers and edge AI architectures. Dr. Atienza has co-authored more than 350 papers, one book, and 12 patents in these previous areas.
