Simon HolzerHi, I am Simon Holzer. I received my B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in mechanical engineering with a focus on microtechnology from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) in 2020 and 2022, respectively. I am currently working towards Ph.D. in the Integrated Actuators Laboratory (LAI) at EPFL in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. My research interests lie in the field of soft robotics, artificial muscles, and biomechanics.

Diego Ruben BarrettinoDiego Barrettino (S’93–M’98–SM’06) received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1997, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) in 2004.
He worked at Allegro MicroSystems Inc., from 1997 to 2000, where he was an Analog IC Designer of Hall-effect magnetic sensors. From 2000 to 2004, he was a Ph.D. student and Research Assistant at ETHZ, where he designed chemical and mechanical sensors. In 2004, he moved to the USA where he designed biomedical devices first as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the University of Washington, and then as an Assistant Professor in the University of Hawaii. In 2006, he returned to Europe where he joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) as a Senior Research Scientist for the design and development of biosensors using organic nanotransistors. From 2007 to 2009, he was a Senior Lecturer in the University of Glasgow, U.K., and in the University College Cork, Republic of Ireland, where he designed ultra-low power biomedical devices. From 2009 to 2017, he was Full Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Microelectronics, Bioelectronics and Sensor Systems (LMBS) at the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), where he designed smart contact lenses and eye implants. In 2017, he joined both the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences (HSLU) and EPFL as a part-time Senior Research Scientist to continue his work on smart sensor systems.
His research interests are in the fields of physical, chemical, and biomedical microsensors; sensor fusion algorithms; analog and mixed-signal IC design; MEMS; embedded systems; avionics and bioelectronics.
Diego Barrettino is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Gabriela Tejada GuerreroGabriela has extensive expertise in international cooperation in education, research and innovation. She joined EPFL as scientist at the Cooperation and Development Center (CODEV) where she led the EPFL Leading House Program (2014-2017) of the Swiss government, which upheld Swiss bilateral research cooperation with Brazil, India, Vietnam and Latin America. Her research focused on scientific diasporas and skilled migration with diverse international collaborations under her leadership. She worked at the University of Zurich, and the UNDP in Moldova and Geneva, and taught at the Monterrey Institute of Technology (ITESM). She was visiting researcher at the CES at Harvard University and the CIS at ETH Zurich. Gabriela obtained a BA in International Relations from the UIA (Ibero) in Mexico, and a PhD in Political Sciences from the UAB in Barcelona. She obtained a CAS IPA - International Policy and Advocacy of the D-MTEC, ETH Zurich (2019). Since 2020 Gabriela is Vice-President of the Swiss Commission for UNESCO (member since 2016), where she promotes science-society linkages and advocates for an inclusive development and dialogue through education, science and culture.Since May 2019, Gabriela is Academic Deputy at the Direction of the College of Humanities (CDH). She serves the Scholars at Risk program (SAR) at EPFL in an advisory capacity.

As an urban plant ecophysiologist I'm interested in how the vegetation in urban systems interacts with the local microclimate. In particular, I study the mechanisms by which trees cope with extreme urban heat, and how their presence modulates the urban climate through transpiration cooling, shading and more. For my research, I combine mostly tree-level measurements, such as gas exchange and heat tolerance, with process-based modelling to scale to the urban canyon and beyond. I'm interested in compa
