Current work
Teaching: My current work at EPFL is half time dedicated to teaching mathematics for 1st year students. It is very important to give satisfactory introductory courses
Johanni Michael BreaTeaching & PhD PhD Students Aude Maier, Lucas Louis Gruaz, Flavio Martinelli Courses Artificial intelligence and society HUM-286 This course integrates social sciences and humanities with engineering sciences, and introduces students to the social, technical and political issues surrounding artificial intelligence. Biological data science II : machine learning BIO-322 Students understand basic concepts and methods of machine learning. They can describe them in mathematical
Simon BossoneyTeaching & PhD Courses Algèbre linéaire et géométrie (pour MAN) PREPA-032(a) We present the fundamental notions of linear algebra in the geometric context where they emerged. We will therefore emphasize the dimensions 2 and 3, and insist on the visualisation of classical objects and operations in the plane and in the 3D space. Analysis I (for CMS) PREPA-003(a) This first semester class is an introduction to the basis of differential calculus. Analysis II (for CMS)

Teaching & PhD Courses Methods in Quantum Error Correction CS-632 This course discusses mathematical methods of quantum error correction in the style via presentation and discussion of research papers. It covers basic algebraic and geometric properties of quantum error correcting codes and fault tolerance theory and prepares for research in this field.
Roger SauserTeaching & PhD Courses Descriptive geometry (for MAN) PREPA-091 The course addresses the techniques of parallel projections (axonometry and Monge representation) and central projection (perspective) in order to develop the student's ability to describe and study objects and spatial situations by illustrating them with technical drawings. ICS (for CMS) PREPA-026 The present course presents numerical methods for solving nonlinear equations, computing definite integrals and sol
Thomas Georges Pierre VidickTeaching & PhD PhD Students Itammar Steinberg, Aviv Taller Courses Formal Mathematics with Lean and AI CS-643 This graduate course provides an introduction to using Lean proof assistant to formalize mathematical definitions and theorems. We will have lectures on foundations (formal proofs, dependent type theory), learn about practice (proof tactics, use of AI, etc) and work on a formalization project. Introduction to quantum computation CS-308 The course introduces the para
Dominique BonvinDominique Bonvin is Professor and Director of the Automatic Control Laboratory of EPFL. He received his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from ETH Zürich, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He worked in the field of process control for the Sandoz Corporation in Basel and with the Systems Engineering Group of ETH Zürich. He joined the EPFL in 1989, where his current research interests include modeling, control and optimization of dynamic systems. He served as Director of the Automatic Control Laboratory for the periods 1993-97, 2003-2007 and again since 2012, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department in 1995-97 and Dean of Bachelor and Master Studies at EPFL for the period 2004-2011.
Maryna ViazovskaMaryna Viazovska did her bachelor studies at the Kyiv National Taras ShevchenkoUniversity and completed her MSc at the Technical University Kaiserslautern. She obtained her PhD in 2013 in Bonn. She was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiquesand at the Humboldt University of Berlin, and in 2017 was a Minerva DistinguishedVisitor at Princeton University. She joined EPFL in 2017 as Tenure-Track AssistantProfessor and was promoted Full Professor in 2018.
Devis TuiaI come from Ticino and studied in Lausanne, between UNIL and EPFL. After my PhD at UNIL in remote sensing, I was postdoc in Valencia (Spain), Boulder (CO) and EPFL, working on model adaptation and prior knowledge integration in machine learning. In 2014 I became Research Assistant Professor at University of Zurich, where I started the 'multimodal remote sensing' group. In 2017, I joined Wageningen University (NL), where I was professor of the GeoInformation Science and Remote Sensing Laboratory. Since 2020, I joined EPFL Valais, to start the ECEO lab, working at the interface between Earth observation, machine learning and environmental sciences.
Dominique PiolettiDominique Pioletti received his Master in Physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) in 1992. He pursued his education in the same Institution and obtained his PhD in biomechanics in 1997. He developed original constitutive laws taking into account viscoelasticity in large deformations. Then he spent two years at UCSD as post-doc fellow acquiring know-how in cell and molecular biology. He was interested in particular to gene expression of bone cells in contact to orthopedic implant. In April 2006, Dominique Pioletti was appointed Assistant Professor tenure-track at the EPFL and is director of the Laboratory of Biomechanical Orthopedics. His research topics include biomechanics and tissue engineering of musculo-skeletal tissues; mechano-transduction in bone; development of orthopedic implant as drug delivery system. Since 2013, he has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor.
Roger HerschRoger D. Hersch is professor of Computer Science and head of the Peripheral Systems Laboratory at EPFL. He received his engineering degree from ETHZ in 1975, worked in industry from 1975 to 1980, and obtained his PhD degree from EPFL in 1985. He directed the widely known
Visible Human Web Server project
, which offers a number of services for the visualization of human anatomy.
His current research focuses on color reproduction, spectral color prediction models, moiré imaging, and visual document security. Recent achievements include the PhotoProtect technology, which incorporates text as chromatic differences in order to protect identity photographs (Swiss driving license), microstructure imaging, which is used by railways companies (SNCF, RENFE) and festival organizers (Paleo) to print tickets at home and the band moire imaging technology for the protection of security documents.
