Adrian BlumenthalTeaching & PhD Courses Numerical integration of dynamical systems MATH-452 In this course we will introduce and study numerical integrators for multi-scale (or stiff) differential equations and dynamical systems with special geometric structures (symplecticity, reversibility, first integrals, etc.). These numerical methods are important for many applications.
Samuel DubuisAfter mathematics studies at EPFL, I go on with a PhD thesis under the supervision of Prof. Marco Picasso. Interested in teaching, I turn to the preparatory year of EPFL (CMS) where I worked since 2020.Centers of interests I like to work in classroom with students, in particular to guide them through elementary mathematics contents, that are the basis of engineering and experimental sciences.I also work with Prof. Picasso and his PhD and intern students in the fields of scientific computing and numerical a

Anna LachowskaTeaching & PhD Courses Algebra MATH-310 This is an introduction to modern algebra: groups, rings and fields. Analysis I MATH-101(e) We study the fundamental concepts of analysis, calculus and the integral of real-valued functions of a real variable. Analysis II MATH-106(e) The course studies fundamental concepts of analysis and the calculus of functions of several variables. Representation theory I - finite groups MATH-314 This is a standard c
Guillaume AnciauxResearchResearch Topics My research can be decomposed in three main blocks:First, the main goal of my current research is the physical description of contact interactions. I performed numerous studies of this topic using different models from the continuum scale down to atomistic scale. Since atomic phenomena and macroscopic observations are linked, the physics of contact needs the simultaneous consideration of several scales. For instance, plasticity is a theory defined for the macroscopic scale whereas t
Olivier MartinOlivier J.F. Martin received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in physics in 1989 and 1994, respectively, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. In 1989, he joined IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, where he investigated thermal and optical properties of semiconductor laser diodes. Between 1994 and 1997 he was a research staff member at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (ETHZ). In 1997 he received a Lecturer fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). During the period 1996-1999, he spent a year and a half in the U.S.A., as invited scientist at the University of California in San Diego (UCSD). In 2001 he received a Professorship grant from the SNSF and became Professor of Nano-Optics at the ETHZ. In 2003, he was appointed Professor of Nanophotonics and Optical Signal Processing at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL), where he is currently head of the Nanophotonics and Metrology Laboratory and Director of the Microengineering Section.

Jean-François MolinariProfessor J.F. Molinari is the director of the Computational Solid Mechanics Laboratory (http://lsms.epfl.ch) at EPFL, Switzerland. He holds an appointment in the Civil Engineering institute, which he directed from 2013 to 2017, and a joint appointment in the Materials Science institute. He started his tenure at EPFL in 2007, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2012. He is currently an elected member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation in Division 2 (Mathematics, Natural and Engineering Sciences), and co editor in chief of the journal Mechanics of Materials. J.F. Molinari graduated from Caltech, USA, in 2001, with a M.S. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics. He held professorships in several countries besides Switzerland, including the United States with a position in Mechanical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University (2000-2006), and France at Ecole Normale Supérieure Cachan in Mechanics (2005-2007), as well as a Teaching Associate position at the Ecole Polytechnique de Paris (2006-2009). The work conducted by Prof. Molinari and his collaborators takes place at the frontier between traditional disciplines and covers several length scales from atomistic to macroscopic scales. Over the years, Professor Molinari and his group have been developing novel multiscale approaches for a seamless coupling across scales. The activities of the laboratory span the domains of damage mechanics of materials and structures, nano- and microstructural mechanical properties, and tribology. Paolo PeronaExpertise
