Dynamic Linkers Are the Narrow Waist of Operating Systems

Adrien Ghosn, Charly Nicolas Lucien Castes

While software applications, programming languages, and hardware have changed, operating systems have not. Widely-used commodity operating systems are still modeled after the ones designed in the seventies. The accumulated burden of backward compatibility ...

Fast Parallel Algorithms for Enumeration of Simple, Temporal, and Hop-Constrained Cycles

Paolo Ienne, Kubilay Atasu, Jovan Blanusa

Finding cycles in directed graphs enables important applications in various domains such as finance, biology, chemistry, and network science. However, as the size of graph datasets continues to grow, it becomes increasingly difficult to discover cycles wit ...

Reliable Microsecond-Scale Distributed Computing

Athanasios Xygkis

The landscape of computing is changing, thanks to the advent of modern networking equipment that allows machines to exchange information in as little as one microsecond. Such advancement has enabled microsecond-scale distributed computing, where entire dis ...

Decentralized in-order execution of a sequential task-based code for shared-memory architectures

Charly Nicolas Lucien Castes

The hardware complexity of modern machines makes the design of adequate programming models crucial for jointly ensuring performance, portability, and productivity in high-performance computing (HPC). Sequential task-based programming models paired with adv ...

HPCache: Memory-Efficient OLAP Through Proportional Caching

Anastasia Ailamaki, Hamish McNiece Hill Nicholson, Periklis Chrysogelos

Analytical engines rely on in-memory caching to avoid disk accesses and provide timely responses by keeping the most frequently accessed data in memory. Purely frequency- & time-based caching decisions, however, are a proxy of the expected query execution ...

Reinforcement Learning-Based Joint Reliability and Performance Optimization for Hybrid-Cache Computing Servers

David Atienza Alonso, Marina Zapater Sancho, Darong Huang

Computing servers play a key role in the development and process of emerging compute-intensive applications in recent years. However, they need to operate efficiently from an energy perspective viewpoint, while maximizing the performance and lifetime of th ...

Request, Coalesce, Serve, and Forget: Miss-Optimized Memory Systems for Bandwidth-Bound Cache-Unfriendly Applications on FPGAs

Paolo Ienne, Mikhail Asiatici

Applications such as large-scale sparse linear algebra and graph analytics are challenging to accelerate on FPGAs due to the short irregular memory accesses, resulting in low cache hit rates. Nonblocking caches reduce the bandwidth required by misses by re ...

Inter-actions parallel execution on GPU from high-level dataflow synthesis

Marco Mattavelli, Simone Casale Brunet, Aurélien François Gilbert Bloch

Recent GPU architectures make available numbers of parallel processing units that exceed by orders of magnitude the ones offered by CPU architectures. Whereas programs written using dataflow programming languages are well suited for programming heterogeneo ...
