Building Chips Faster: Hardware-Compiler Co-Design for Accelerated RTL Simulation

Sahand Kashani

The demise of Moore's Law and Dennard scaling has resulted in diminishing performance gains for general-purpose processors, and so has prompted a surge in academic and commercial interest for hardware accelerators. Specialized hardware has already redefine ...

HetCache: Synergising NVMe Storage and GPU acceleration for Memory-Efficient Analytics

Anastasia Ailamaki, Periklis Chrysogelos, Syed Mohammad Aunn Raza, Hamish McNiece Hill Nicholson

Accessing input data is a critical operation in data analytics: i) slow data access significantly degrades performance, and ii) storing everything in the fastest medium, i.e., memory, incurs high operational and hardware costs. Further, while GPUs offer in ...

Acceleration of Control Intensive Applications on Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Arrays for Embedded Systems

David Atienza Alonso, Miguel Peon Quiros, Benoît Walter Denkinger

Embedded systems confront two opposite goals: low-power operation and high performance. The current trend to reach these goals is toward heterogeneous platforms, including multi-core architectures with heterogeneous cores and hardware accelerators. The lat ...

Bit-Line Computing for CNN Accelerators Co-Design in Edge AI Inference

David Atienza Alonso, Giovanni Ansaloni, Alexandre Sébastien Julien Willommet, Flavio Ponzina, Marco Antonio Rios

By supporting the access of multiple memory words at the same time, Bit-line Computing (BC) architectures allow the parallel execution of bit-wise operations in-memory. At the array periphery, arithmetic operations are then derived with little additional o ...

Analysis of the influence of errors in DNA-based image coding

Touradj Ebrahimi, Michela Testolina, Davi Nachtigall Lazzarotto

In the last decade, DNA has been increasingly investigated as an alternative medium for cold data storage, presenting several advantages over standard hard drives such as a higher density, longer lifespan and lower energy consumption. However, such coding ...

A 128-kbit GC-eDRAM With Negative Boosted Bootstrap Driver for 11.3x Lower-Refresh Frequency at a 2.5% Area Overhead in 28-nm FD-SOI

Andreas Peter Burg, Robert Giterman, Halil Andac Yigit, Emmanuel Nieto Casarrubias

Gain-cell embedded DRAM (GC-eDRAM) is a high-density logic-compatible alternative to conventional static random-access memory (SRAM) and embedded DRAM (eDRAM). However, GC-eDRAM suffers from a reduced data retention time (DRT) at deeply-scaled process node ...
