Hydrogel-Encased Photonic Microspheres with Enhanced Color Saturation and High Suspension Stability

Regular arrays of colloidal particles can produce striking structural colors without the need for any chemical pigments. Regular arrays of colloidal particles can be processed into microparticles via emulsion templates for use as structural colorants. Phot ...

Fabrication of micrometer-sized drops as templates for particles

Mathias Steinacher

Drops are omnipresent in our daily life for example in the form of rain drops or as oil drops in a salad dressing. On a technological basis, drops can be used to conduct chemical or biological reactions. These drops often serve as templates to produce mate ...

Microfluidics of binary liquid mixtures with temperature-dependent miscibility

Esther Amstad

Liquid-liquid microfluidic systems rely on the intricate control over the fluid properties of either miscible or immiscible mixtures. Herein, we report on the use of partially miscible binary liquid mixtures that lend their microfluidic properties from a h ...

Microfluidic-based linear-optics label-free imager

Demetri Psaltis

Linear optics based nanoscopy previously reached resolution beyond the diffraction limit, illuminating samples in the visible light regime while allowing light to interact with freely moving metallic nanoparticles. However, the hydrodynamics governing the ...

Dynamic response of a compressible binary fluid mixture

Ignacio Pagonabarraga Mora

Binary fluids are present in a wide variety of systems at microscales, such as microfluidic devices containing drops, fluids with air bubbles trapped in them, and devices designed to mix fluids or to make two fluid substances react. Microfluidics devices a ...

Fluorinated surfactants in droplet-based microfluidics: Influence of their composition on the properties of emulsion drops

Gianluca Nicolas Etienne

Miniaturization has been a driving force in many areas of science and technology, most notably in the electronics industry. Droplet-based microfluidics, a methode to produce emulsion drops in a controlled way and at high-throughputs, enables the miniaturiz ...

Production of monodisperse drops from viscous fluids

Esther Amstad, Mathias Steinacher, Armend Gazmeno Hati, Tomasz Radoslaw Szymborski

Drops are often used as picoliter-sized reaction vessels, for example for high-throughput screening assays, or as templates to produce particles of controlled sizes and compositions. Many of these applications require close control over the size of drops, ...

Capsules with submicron shells: production, stability, and leakage behavior

Antoine Claude Jean Vian

Capsules are often employed to prolong the shelf-life of active ingredients such as many drugs, food additives, or cosmetic substances because they delay their oxidation or prevent interactions with molecules contained in the surrounding. If designed prope ...

Microfluidic Production of Capsules-in-Capsules for Programed Release of Multiple Ingredients

Esther Amstad

Capsules with thin shells have a high‐loading capacity and are thus well‐suited containers for reagents that must be stored in confined volumes. Capsules contained in larger capsules, so‐called double capsules, allow the encapsulation of distinct reagents ...

PZE-transduced Suspended Microchannel Resonators for sensing applications

Annalisa De Pastina

This PhD thesis aims at developing a system which can measure the mechanical properties of fluidic samples in the picoliter range. The ultimate goal is the characterization of cancer cells and viscoelastic fluids (i.e. biological fluids), in order to study ...

Biocompatible Amphiphilic Hydrogel–Solid Dimer Particles as Colloidal Surfactants

Esther Amstad

Emulsions of two immiscible liquids can slowly coalesce over time when stabilized by surfactant molecules. Pickering emulsions stabilized by colloidal particles can be much more stable. Here, we fabricate biocompatible amphiphilic dimer particles using a h ...

On-Chip Fabrication of Paclitaxel-Loaded Chitosan Nanoparticles for Cancer Therapeutics

Philippe Renaud, Arnaud Bertsch, Jules John Vandersarl

The use of solvent-free microfluidics to fine-tune the physical and chemical properties of chitosan nanoparticles for drug delivery is demonstrated. Nanoparticle self-assembly is driven by pH changes in a water environment, which increases biocompatibility ...

Microfluidic chip for monitoring Ca2+ transport through a confluent layer of intestinal cells

Martinus Adela Maria Gijs

The absorption of dietary calcium through the intestinal barrier is essential for maintaining health in general and especially of the bone system. We propose a microfluidic model that studies free calcium (Ca2+) transport through a confluent monolayer of C ...

A microfluidic process for on-chip formation of assemblies of oxide nanoparticles

Martinus Adela Maria Gijs, Virendra Kumar Parashar

We report the continuous growth of spherical assemblies of silica and titania nanoparticles, which were pre-activated to produce hydroxyl/ peroxy groups on their surface, by flowing a colloid-in-dioctyl phthalate emulsion into a polydimethylsiloxane microf ...

Hydrogel-coated microfluidic channels for cardiomyocyte culture

The research areas of tissue engineering and drug development have displayed increased interest in organ-on-a-chip studies, in which physiologically or pathologically relevant tissues can be engineered to test pharmaceutical candidates. Microfluidic techno ...

From Particles to Pillars : Droplet Microfluidics Applied to the Synthesis and Assembly of Functional Metal-Oxide Nanoparticles

Josias Basil Wacker

Metal oxide nanoparticles and their applications (e.g. in nano-electronics, nano-optics or drug delivery) have seen a growing interest in the past decades. Traditional procedures to synthesize, functionalize and integrate nanoparticles in devices mostly ha ...

Grafting submicron titania particles with gold nanoparticles using droplet microfluidics

Martinus Adela Maria Gijs, Virendra Kumar Parashar, Josias Basil Wacker

A microfluidic method to synthesize gold–titania nanocomposites is presented. Porous TiO2 particles are first loaded with a reducing agent and then suspended in water and mixed with chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) in a droplet-by-droplet manner on a microfluidic ...

Microfluidic synthesis of chitosan-based nanoparticles for fuel cell applications

Philippe Renaud, Arnaud Bertsch, Mojtaba Taghipoor

A microfluidic platform is developed for the synthesis of monodisperse, 100 nm, chitosan based nanoparticles using nanogelation with ATP. The resulting nanoparticles tuned and enhanced transport and electrochemical properties of Nafion based nanocomposite ...

From particles to pillars: on-chip synthesis of silica nanoparticle assemblies with controlled shape and size

Martinus Adela Maria Gijs, Virendra Kumar Parashar, Josias Basil Wacker

We describe the assembly of silica nanoparticles into superstructures with controlled shape and size. The individual nanoparticles are chemically linked to each other via silica bridges, thus providing high mechanical stability to the assembly. Key to cont ...
