Voltage-tunable optical parametric oscillator with an alternating dispersion dimer integrated on a chip

Tobias Kippenberg, Johann Emmeram Riemensberger, Alexey Tikan, Aleksandr Tusnin

Optical parametric oscillators enable the conversion of pump light to new frequency bands using nonlinear optical processes. Recent advances in integrated nonlinear photonics have led to the creation of compact, chip-scale sources via Kerr-nonlinearity-ind ...

High density lithium niobate photonic integrated circuits

Tobias Kippenberg, Johann Emmeram Riemensberger, Rui Ning Wang, Anat Siddharth, Mikhail Churaev, Nikolai Kuznetsov, Zihan Li, Junyin Zhang, Zelin Tan

Photonic integrated circuits have the potential to pervade into multiple applications traditionally limited to bulk optics. Of particular interest for new applications are ferroelectrics such as Lithium Niobate, which exhibit a large Pockels effect, but ar ...

Integrated silicon photonic MEMS

Niels Quack, Alain Yuji Takabayashi, Hamed Sattari

Silicon photonics has emerged as a mature technology that is expected to play a key role in critical emerging applications, including very high data rate optical communications, distance sensing for autonomous vehicles, photonic-accelerated computing, and ...

Programmable Silicon Nitride Photonic Integrated Circuits

Tobias Kippenberg, Johann Emmeram Riemensberger, Anat Siddharth, Andrey Voloshin, Viacheslav Snigirev, Andrea Bancora, Vladimir Shadymov

Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) photonic integrated circuits (PICs) have emerged as core technology in a variety of applications ranging from LIDAR to quantum control and computing. However, the need for high-speed, low-voltage tuning and modulation has been a lon ...

Ultrafast tunable lasers using lithium niobate integrated photonics

Tobias Kippenberg, Junqiu Liu, Johann Emmeram Riemensberger, Rui Ning Wang, Anat Siddharth, Guanhao Huang, Mikhail Churaev, Viacheslav Snigirev

Early works(1) and recent advances in thin-film lithium niobate (LiNbO3) on insulator have enabled low-loss photonic integrated circuits(2,3), modulators with improved half-wave voltage(4,5), electro-optic frequency combs(6) and on-chip electro-optic devic ...

NATURE PORTFOLIO2023

Hybrid lithium niobate-on-silicon nitride platform for mid-IR supercontinuum generation

Tobias Kippenberg

Integrated optics has shown itself very convenient for exploiting nonlinear processes as it results in high confinement factor, freedom of dispersion engineering and compactness. However, the choice of materials is crucial for the development of nonlinear ...

A chip-scale second-harmonic source via self-injection-locked all-optical poling

Tobias Kippenberg, Camille Sophie Brès, Junqiu Liu, Edgars Nitiss, Marco Clementi

Second-harmonic generation allows for coherently bridging distant regions of the optical spectrum, with applications ranging from laser technology to self-referencing of frequency combs. However, accessing the nonlinear response of a medium typically requi ...

Metamaterial graphene photodetector with bandwidth exceeding 500 gigahertz

Yesim Koyaz

Although graphene has met many of its initially predicted optoelectronic, thermal, and mechanical properties, photodetectors with large spectral bandwidths and extremely high frequency responses remain outstanding. In this work, we demonstrate a >500 gigah ...

Crossing of the Branch Cut: The Topological Origin of a Universal 2 pi-Phase Retardation in Non-Hermitian Metasurfaces

Olivier Martin, Karim Achouri

Full wavefront control by photonic components requires that the spatial phase modulation on an incoming optical beam ranges from 0 to 2 pi. Because of their radiative coupling to the environment, all optical components are intrinsically non-Hermitian syste ...

Dendrimer-Based Coatings on a Photonic Crystal Surface for Ultra-Sensitive Small Molecule Detection

Serguei Sekatski

We propose and demonstrate dendrimer-based coatings for a sensitive biochip surface that enhance the high-performance sorption of small molecules (i.e., biomolecules with low molecular weights) and the sensitivity of a label-free, real-time photonic crysta ...

A heterogeneously integrated lithium niobate-on-silicon nitride photonic platform

Tobias Kippenberg, Junqiu Liu, Johann Emmeram Riemensberger, Rui Ning Wang, Anat Siddharth, Mikhail Churaev, Viacheslav Snigirev, Terence Albert Emile Blésin

The availability of thin-film lithiumniobate on insulator (LNOI) and advances in processing have led to the emergence of fully integrated LiNbO3 electro-optic devices. Yet to date, LiNbO3 photonic integrated circuits have mostly been fabricated using non-s ...

Integrated Backward Second-Harmonic Generation through Optically Induced Quasi-Phase-Matching

Camille Sophie Brès, Jianqi Hu, Edgars Nitiss, Ozan Yakar

Quasi-phase-matching for efficient backward second-harmonic generation requires sub-μm poling periods, a nontrivial fabrication feat. For the first time, we report integrated first-order quasiphase-matched backward second-harmonic generation enabled by see ...
