Insight into the electronic structure of semiconducting epsilon-GaSe and epsilon-InSe

Helmuth Berger, Marco Grioni, Alberto Crepaldi

Metal monochalcogenides (MX) have recently been rediscovered as two-dimensional materials with electronic properties highly dependent on the number of layers. Although some intriguing properties appear in the few-layer regime, the carrier mobility of MX co ...

Light-Induced Renormalization of the Dirac Quasiparticles in the Nodal-Line Semimetal ZrSiSe

Majed Chergui, Helmuth Berger, Marco Grioni, Arnaud Magrez, Alberto Crepaldi, Philippe Bugnon, Michele Puppin, Gianmarco Gatti, Serhii Polishchuk

In nodal-line semimetals, linearly dispersing states form Dirac loops in the reciprocal space with a high degree of electron-hole symmetry and a reduced density of states near the Fermi level. The result is reduced electronic screening and enhanced correla ...

Quantum interference effects of out-of-plane confinement on two-dimensional electron systems in oxides

Ji Dai

It was recently discovered that a conductive, metallic state is formed on the surface of some insulating oxides. First observed on SrTiO3 (001), it was then found in other compounds as diverse as anatase TiO2, KTaO3, BaTiO3, ZnO, and also on different surf ...

Role of a higher-dimensional interaction in stabilizing charge density waves in quasi-one-dimensional NbSe3 revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Helmuth Berger

We revisit charge density wave (CDW) behavior in the archetypal quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) material NbSe3 by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements utilizing a microfocused laser with a photon energy of 6.3 eV. We pres ...

Weyl fermions, Fermi arcs, and minority-spin carriers in ferromagnetic CoS2

Samuel Thomas Stolz

Magnetic Weyl semimetals are a newly discovered class of topological materials that may serve as a platform for exotic phenomena, such as axion insulators or the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here, we use angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ab i ...

Topological Fermi-arc surface resonances in bcc iron

Oleg Yazyev, Gabriel Albert Autes, Daniel Gosalbez Martinez

The topological classification of matter has been extended to include semimetallic phases characterized by the presence of topologically protected band degeneracies. In Weyl semimetals, the foundational gapless topological phase, chiral degeneracies are is ...

Optoelectronic and magnetic properties induced by atomic defects in two-dimensional semiconductors

Alessio Scavuzzo

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted increasing attention over the last decade owing to their remarkable mechanical, electrical and optical properties. Following the groundbreaking discovery of graphene, a plethora of other atomically-thin materia ...

Handedness-dependent quasiparticle interference in the two enantiomers of the topological chiral semimetal PdGa

Samuel Thomas Stolz

It has recently been proposed that combining chirality with topological band theory results in a totally new class of fermions. Understanding how these unconventional quasiparticles propagate and interact remains largely unexplored so far. Here, we use sca ...

Fully spin-polarized bulk states in ferroelectric GeTe

Jan Hugo Dil, Mauro Fanciulli

By measuring the spin polarization of GeTe films as a function of light polarization we observed that the bulk states are fully spin polarized in the initial state, in strong contrast with observations for other systems with a strong spin-orbit interaction ...

Radial Spin Texture of the Weyl Fermions in Chiral Tellurium

Majed Chergui, Henrik Moodysson Rønnow, Marco Grioni, Oleg Yazyev, Alberto Crepaldi, Philippe Bugnon, Edoardo Martino, Michele Puppin, Gianmarco Gatti, Luc Testa, Silvan Dino Marcos Roth, Daniel Gosalbez Martinez, Serhii Polishchuk

Trigonal tellurium, a small-gap semiconductor with pronounced magneto-electric and magneto-optical responses, is among the simplest realizations of a chiral crystal. We have studied by spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy its unconventional ...

Terahertz surface modes and electron-phonon coupling on Bi2Se3(111)

Davide Campi

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the surface vibrational modes of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 with particular emphasis on the low-energy region below 10 meV that has been difficult to resolve experimentally. By applying inel ...
