Optimizing Dynamic Aperture Studies with Active Learning

Tatiana Pieloni, Davide Di Croce, Mike Seidel

Dynamic aperture is an important concept for the study of non-linear beam dynamics in circular accelerators. It describes the extent of the phase-space region where a particle's motion remains bounded over a given number of turns. Understanding the feature ...

Collimation simulations for the FCC-ee

Tatiana Pieloni

The collimation system of the Future Circular Collider, operating with leptons (FCC-ee), must protect not only the experiments against backgrounds, but also the machine itself from beam losses. With a 17.8 MJ stored energy of the electron and positron beam ...

Precision luminosity measurement at hadron colliders

Joanna Malgorzata Wanczyk

This thesis links two realms of particle accelerator dynamics and precision particle physics. The achievement of precise luminosity measurement at hadron colliders is enabled with dedicated luminometers. For the Run 3 period, the luminometer upgrade was ...

Impact of beam-coupling impedance on the Schottky spectrum of bunched beam

Tatiana Pieloni

The Schottky monitors of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be used for non-invasive beam diagnostics to estimate various bunch characteristics, such as tune, chromaticity, bunch profile or synchrotron frequency distribution. However, collective effects, ...

Studies of crystal collimation for heavy ion operation at the LHC

Rongrong Cai

At CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), proton and heavy-ion beams are accelerated to multi-TeV energies to be collided for the needs of the scientific community around the world. The total stored beam energy of tens to hundreds ofMJ creates potential threa ...

Energy-Efficient Particle Accelerators for Research

Mike Seidel

Particle accelerators are the drivers for large-scale research infrastructures for particle physics but also for many branches of condensed matter research. The types of accelerator-driven research infrastructures include particle colliders, neutron, muon ...

Bridging Monte Carlo worlds: a new framework for accelerator simulations applied on shielding and machine protection studies

André Donadón Servelle

This thesis delves into the critical study of particle transport in matter, particularly emphasising its implications for machine protection at CERN's accelerator complex and facilities. To conduct studies of this nature, FLUKA and Geant4 stand out within ...

Muon Collider Forum report

Théodora Cohen Liechti

A multi-TeV muon collider offers a spectacular opportunity in the direct exploration of the energy frontier. Offering a combination of unprecedented energy collisions in a comparatively clean leptonic environment, a high energy muon collider has the unique ...

Hosing of a Long Relativistic Particle Bunch in Plasma

Ambrogio Fasoli, Ivo Furno, Yanis Andrebe, Riccardo Agnello, Christine Stollberg

Experimental results show that hosing of a long particle bunch in plasma can be induced by wakefields driven by a short, misaligned preceding bunch. Hosing develops in the plane of misalignment, selfmodulation in the perpendicular plane, at frequencies clo ...

Impact of beam-beam effects on absolute luminosity calibrations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Tatiana Pieloni, Claudia Tambasco

At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), absolute luminosity calibrations obtained by the van der Meer (vdM) method are affected by the mutual electromagnetic interaction of the two beams. The colliding bunches experience relative orbit shifts, as well as optic ...

Characterization of Transverse Instabilities Driven by Electron Cloud

Sofia Carolina Johannesson

Electron cloud continues to be one of the main limiting factors of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the biggest accelerator at CERN. These clouds form in the beam chamber when positively charged particles are passing through and cause unwanted effects in b ...

The Forward Physics Facility at the High-Luminosity LHC

Lesya Shchutska

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located s ...

Alignment & stability challenges for FCC-ee

Léon Van Riesen-Haupt

In order to achieve its ultra-low vertical emittance (1 pm) and high luminosity (of up to 230 x 10(34) cm(-2) s(-1) per collision point), the e(+)e(-) Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) requires a well-informed alignment strategy, powerful correction method ...

Development of the self-modulation instability of a relativistic proton bunch in plasma

Ambrogio Fasoli, Ivo Furno, Patrick Blanchard, Ana Francisca Leal Silva Soares, Yanis Andrebe, Riccardo Agnello, Samuel Rey-Mermet, Christine Stollberg, Alban Sublet

Self-modulation is a beam-plasma instability that is useful to drive large-amplitude wakefields with bunches much longer than the plasma skin depth. We present experimental results showing that, when increasing the ratio between the initial transverse size ...

Measurements of inclusive and differential cross sections for the Higgs boson production and decay to four-leptons in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV

Jan Steggemann, Konstantin Androsov, Anna Mascellani

Measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections for the Higgs boson production in the H -> ZZ -> 4 l ( l = e, mu) decay channel are presented. The results are obtained from the analysis of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ...
