III-N blue-emitting epi-structures with high densities of dislocations: Fundamental mechanisms for efficiency improvement and applications

Since the dawn of humanity, human beings seeked to light their surroundings for their well-being, security and development. The efficiency of ancient lighting devices, e.g. oil lamps or candles, was in the order of 0.03-0.04% and jumped to 0.4-0.6% with th ...

A compact approach to higher-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering detection using photoelectrons

Henrik Moodysson Rønnow

The detection of inelastically scattered soft x-rays with high energy resolution usually requires large grating spectrometers. Recently, photoelectron spectrometry for analysis of x-rays (PAX) has been rediscovered for modern spectroscopy experiments at sy ...

Field-controlled multicritical behavior and emergent universality in fully frustrated quantum magnets

Bruce Normand

Phase transitions in condensed matter are a source of exotic emergent properties. We study the fully frustrated bilayer Heisenberg antiferromagnet to demonstrate that an applied magnetic field creates a previously unknown emergent criticality. The quantum ...

Long live(d) CsPbBr3 superlattices: colloidal atomic layer deposition for structural stability

Raffaella Buonsanti, Philippe Benjamin Green, Alexander Nicolas Chen

Superlattice formation afforded by metal halide perovskite nanocrystals has been a phenomenon of interest due to the high structural order induced in these self-assemblies, an order that is influenced by the surface chemistry and particle morphology of the ...

Exciton migration in two-dimensional materials

Giovanni Consalvo Cistaro

Excitons play an essential role in the optical response of two-dimensional materials. These are bound states showing up in the band gaps of many-body systems and are conceived as quasiparticles formed by an electron and a hole. By performing real-time simu ...

Pore size estimation in axon-mimicking microfibers with diffusion-relaxation MRI

Jean-Philippe Thiran

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate two distinct approaches for fiber radius estimation using diffusion-relaxation MRI data acquired in biomimetic microfiber phantoms that mimic hollow axons. The methods considered are the spherical mean power-law approac ...

Magnon-Assisted Magnetization Reversal of Ni81Fe19 Nanostripes on Y3Fe5O12 with Different Interfaces

Dirk Grundler, Andrea Mucchietto, Korbinian Baumgärtl

Magnetic bit writing by short-wave magnons without conversion to the electrical domain is expected to be a game-changer for in-memory computing architectures. Recently, the reversal of nanomagnets by propagating magnons was demonstrated. However, experimen ...

Fluorescence microscopy: A statistics-optics perspective

Aleksandra Radenovic

Fundamental properties of light unavoidably impose features on images collected using fluorescence microscopes. Accounting for these features is often critical in quantitatively interpreting microscopy images, especially those gathering information at scal ...

Ghost imaging using two SPAD array detectors: a parameter study towards the realization of a 3D quantum microscope

Edoardo Charbon, Claudio Bruschini, Paul Mos, Yang Lin

Quantum ghost imaging can be an important tool in making optical measurements. One of the most useful aspects of ghost imaging is the unique ability to correlate two sets of independently collected information. We aim to use the principles of ghost imaging ...

Advancements in Nanomechanical Characterization and Biomolecular Imaging with Atomic force Microscopy

Veronika Cencen

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a widely used imaging tool for obtaining a variety of information for a range of samples. Although it was initially intended to serve as a method of observing very flat solid surfaces, its use expanded into several other fi ...

Solution-based Cu+ transient species mediate the reconstruction of copper electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

Raffaella Buonsanti, Anna Loiudice, Jan Vávra, Petru Pasquale Albertini

Understanding metal surface reconstruction is of the utmost importance in electrocatalysis, as this phenomenon directly affects the nature of available active sites. However, its dynamic nature renders surface reconstruction notoriously difficult to study. ...

Re-design of EU DEMO with a low aspect ratio

Xabier Sarasola Martin

The design point that had been chosen for EU DEMO in 2016 is reviewed here and a modification is proposed with a lower aspect ratio. Previously the same aspect ratio, A, was chosen for EU DEMO as in major tokamak experiments including ITER (A = 3.1), and, ...
