Noise-induced transitions past the onset of a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation: The case of the sudden expansion

François Gallaire, Edouard Boujo, Yves-Marie François Ducimetière

We consider fluid flows, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, subject to a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation and forced by a weak noise acting on a slow timescale. By generalizing the multiple-scale weakly nonlinear expansion technique employed in t ...

Stochastic Simulations and Machine Learning Modeling to Predict Bedload Transport and Bed Topography

Mehrdad Kiani Oshtorjani

In computational hydraulics models, predicting bed topography and bedload transport with sufficient accuracy remains a significant challenge. An accurate assessment of a river's sediment transport rate necessitates a prior understanding of its bed topograp ...

Anomalous dissipation and other non-smooth phenomena in fluids

Massimo Sorella

The thesis is dedicated to the study of two main partial differential equations (PDEs) in fluid dynamics: the Navier-Stokes equations, which describe the motion of incompressible fluids, and the transport equation with divergence-free velocity fields, whic ...

Adaptive Finite Elements with Large Aspect Ratio. Application to Aluminium Electrolysis

Paride Passelli

The goal of this work is to use anisotropic adaptive finite elements for the numerical simulation of aluminium electrolysis. The anisotropic adaptive criteria are based on a posteriori error estimates derived for simplified problems. First, we consider an ...

Effects of Hyporheic Exchange and Settlement on the Particle Size Distribution of Colloids

David Andrew Barry

Colloid particle size plays an important role in contaminant adsorption and clogging in the hyporheic zone, but it remains unclear how the particle size changes during the transport of colloids. This study investigated the variation of the particle size of ...

A cut-cell method for the numerical simulation of 3D multiphase flows with strong interfacial effects

Marco Picasso, Julien Hess

We present a numerical model for the approximation of multiphase flows with free surfaces and strong interfacial effects. The model relies on the multiphase incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and includes surface tension effects on the interfaces betw ...

Painting Taylor vortices with cellulose nanocrystals: Suspension flow supercritical spectral dynamics

Marianne Liebi

We study the flow stability and spatiotemporal spectral dynamics of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions in a custom Taylor-Couette flow cell using the intrinsic shear induced birefringence and liquid crystalline properties of CNC suspensions for flow v ...

Mean-field transport equations and energy theorem for plasma edge turbulent transport

Reinart Andreas J. Coosemans

This paper establishes a mean-field equation set and an energy theorem to provide a theoretical basis in view of the development of self-consistent, physics-based turbulent transport models for mean-field transport codes. A rigorous averaging procedure ide ...

Quantitative convergence rates for scaling limit of SPDEs with transport noise

Lucio Galeati

We consider on the torus the scaling limit of stochastic 2D (inviscid) fluid dynamics equations with transport noise to deterministic viscous equations. Quantitative estimates on the convergence rates are provided by combining analytic and probabilistic ar ...

Nonlinear simulation of plasma turbulence using a gyrokinetic moment-based approach

Antoine Cyril David Hoffmann

Plasma turbulence plays a fundamental role in determining the performances of magnetic confinement fusion devices, such as tokamaks. Advances in computer science, combined with the development of efficient physical models, have significantly improved our u ...

Understanding snow saltation parameterizations: lessons from theory, experiments and numerical simulations

Michael Lehning, Armin Sigmund, Daniela Brito Melo

Drifting and blowing snow are important features in polar and high mountain regions. They control the surface mass balance in windy conditions and influence sublimation of snow and ice surfaces. Despite their importance, model representations in weather an ...

A Method of Moments Estimator for Interacting Particle Systems and their Mean Field Limit

Andrea Zanoni

We study the problem of learning unknown parameters in stochastic interacting particle systems with polynomial drift, interaction, and diffusion functions from the path of one single particle in the system. Our estimator is obtained by solving a linear sys ...

SPACE-TIME REDUCED BASIS METHODS FOR PARAMETRIZED UNSTEADY STOKES EQUATIONS

Simone Deparis, Riccardo Tenderini

In this work, we analyze space-time reduced basis methods for the efficient numerical simulation of haemodynamics in arteries. The classical formulation of the reduced basis (RB) method features dimensionality reduction in space, while finite difference sc ...

Instability and trajectories of buoyancy-driven annular disks: A numerical study

François Gallaire

We investigate the stability of the steady vertical path and the emerging trajectories of a buoyancy -driven annular disk as the diameter of its central hole is varied. The steady and axisymmetric wake associated with the steady vertical path of the disk, ...

Morphometry of Tidal Meander Cutoffs Indicates Similarity to Fluvial Morphodynamics

Andrea Rinaldo

Sinuous channels wandering through coastal wetlands have been thought to lack lateral-migration features like meander cutoffs and oxbows, spurring the broad interpretation that tidal and fluvial meanders differ morphodynamically. Motivated by recent work s ...
