Semantic Shape Editing with Parametric Implicit Templates

Uday Kusupati

We propose a semantic shape editing method to edit 3D triangle meshes using parametric implicit surface templates, benefiting from the many advantages offered by analytical implicit representations, such as infinite resolution and boolean or blending opera ...

Deep Learning for 3D Surface Modelling and Reconstruction

Benoît Alain René Guillard

In recent years, there has been a significant revolution in the field of deep learning, which has demonstrated its effectiveness in automatically capturing intricate patterns from large datasets. However, the majority of these successes in Computer Vision ...

A Full-Wave Reference Simulator for Computing Surface Reflectance

Mengqi Xia

Computing light reflection from rough surfaces is an important topic in computer graphics. Reflection models developed based on geometric optics fail to capture wave effects such as diffraction and interference, while existing models based on physical opti ...

C-shells: Deployable Gridshells with Curved Beams

Mark Pauly, Yingying Ren, Francis Julian Panetta, Seiichi Eduardo Suzuki Erazo, Quentin Christian Becker, Davide Pellis

We introduce a computational pipeline for simulating and designing C-shells, a new class of planar-to-spatial deployable linkage structures. A C-shell is composed of curved flexible beams connected at rotational joints that can be assembled in a stress-fre ...

Computational conceptual design — typological exploration of spatial truss systems through optimization

Corentin Jean Dominique Fivet, Jonas Warmuth

Exploring a wide range of design options is crucial for every sound conceptual design process. In the conventional structural design workflow, optimization techniques are generally employed to generate well-performing design options. However, focusing only ...

A comprehensive review of digital twin-part 2: roles of uncertainty quantification and optimization, a battery digital twin, and perspectives

Olga Fink

As an emerging technology in the era of Industry 4.0, digital twin is gaining unprecedented attention because of its promise to further optimize process design, quality control, health monitoring, decision- and policy-making, and more, by comprehensively m ...

Automated image-based generation of finite element models for masonry buildings

Katrin Beyer, Radhakrishna Achanta, Bryan German Pantoja Rosero

To predict the response of masonry buildings to various types of loads, engineers use finite element models, specifically solid-element and macro-element models. For predicting masonry responses to seismic events in particular, equivalent frame models-a su ...

Synthesis and Analysis of 3D shapes with Geometric Deep Learning in Computer-Aided Engineering

Edoardo Remelli

In this thesis, we advocate that Computer-Aided Engineering could benefit from a Geometric Deep Learning revolution, similarly to the way that Deep Learning revolutionized Computer Vision. To do so, we consider a variety of Computer-Aided Engineering pr ...

Multi-Level Monte Carlo Methods for Uncertainty Quantification and Risk-Averse Optimisation

Sundar Subramaniam Ganesh

This work aims to study the effects of wind uncertainties in civil engineering structural design. Optimising the design of a structure for safety or operability without factoring in these uncertainties can result in a design that is not robust to these per ...

Geometrical Treatise on the Modelling of 3D Particulate Inclusion-Matrix Microstructures with an Application to Historical Stone Masonry Walls

Mahmoud S. M. Shaqfa

As historical stone masonry structures are vulnerable and prone to damage in earthquakes, investigating their structural integrity is important to reduce injuries and casualties while preserving their historical value. Stone masonry is a composite material ...

Reduced order modelling of nonaffine problems on parameterized NURBS multipatch geometries

Annalisa Buffa, Pablo Antolin Sanchez, Margarita Chasapi

This contribution explores the combined capabilities of reduced basis methods and IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) in the context of parameterized partial differential equations. The introduction of IGA enables a unified simulation framework based on a single g ...

Meshing of Spiny Neuronal Morphologies using Union Operators

Felix Schürmann, Marwan Muhammad Ahmed Abdellah, Nadir Roman Guerrero, Alessandro Enrico Foni, Elvis Boci, Juan José García Cantero

Neurons are characterized by thin and long interleaving arborizations in which creating accurate mesh models of their cellular membranes is challenging. While union operators are central for CAD/CAM modeling and computer graphics applications, their applic ...

Stabilized isogeometric discretizations on trimmed and union geometries, and weak imposition of the boundary conditions for the Darcy flow

Riccardo Puppi

Modern manufacturing engineering is based on a ``design-through-analysis'' workflow. According to this paradigm, a prototype is first designed with Computer-aided-design (CAD) software and then finalized by simulating its physical behavior, which usually i ...

Learning to Represent and Reconstruct 3D Deformable Objects

Jan Bednarík

Representing and reconstructing 3D deformable shapes are two tightly linked problems that have long been studied within the computer vision field. Deformable shapes are truly ubiquitous in the real world, whether be it specific object classes such as human ...

Adaptive analysis-aware defeaturing

Ondine Gabrielle Chanon

Removing geometrical details from a complex domain is a classical operation in computer aided design for simulation and manufacturing. This procedure simplifies the meshing process, and it enables faster simulations with less memory requirements. However, ...

Image-based geometric digital twinning for stone masonry elements

Katrin Beyer

We present an image-based pipeline for generating geometrical digital twins (GDTs) of stone masonry elements with detail down to the stone level. For this purpose, we acquire RGB images of the individual stones and of the wall during the construction phase ...
