Noise-induced transitions past the onset of a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation: The case of the sudden expansion

François Gallaire, Edouard Boujo, Yves-Marie François Ducimetière

We consider fluid flows, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, subject to a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation and forced by a weak noise acting on a slow timescale. By generalizing the multiple-scale weakly nonlinear expansion technique employed in t ...

Identifying invariant solutions of wall-bounded three-dimensional shear flows using robust adjoint-based variational techniques

Tobias Schneider, Omid Ashtari

Invariant solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations play an important role in the spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics of turbulent shear flows. Despite the significance of these solutions, their identification remains a computational challenge, rendering many ...

On the Capability of Wall-Modeled Large Eddy Simulations to Predict Particle Dispersion in Complex Turbulent Flows

Mohamed Aly Hashem Mohamed Sayed

Predicting particle transport in turbulent flows has a plethora of applications, some of which are: the transport of atmospheric aerosols, the deposition of blood cells in the arteries of human bodies and the atomization of fuel droplets in combustion cham ...

From coating flow patterns to porous body wake dynamics via multiscale models

Pier Giuseppe Ledda

Multiscale phenomena are involved in countless problems in fluid mechanics. Coating flows are known to exhibit a broad variety of patterns, such as wine tears in a glass and dripping of fresh paint applied on a wall. Coating flows are typically modeled und ...

Effects of velocity-dependent apparent toughness on the pre- and post-shut-in growth of a hydraulic fracture

Dong Liu, Guanyi Lu

We investigate the growth of a plane-strain/radial hydraulic fracture in an infinite impermeable medium driven by a constant injection rate assuming that the apparent toughness scales with the decreasing fracture growth rate in a power-law relation. The vi ...

Periodic orbits exhibit oblique stripe patterns in plane Couette flow

Tobias Schneider, Florian Reetz

Spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics of transitional plane Couette flow may give rise to regular turbulent-laminar stripe patterns with a large-scale pattern wavelength and an oblique orientation relative to the laminar flow direction. A recent dynamical syst ...

Data-Driven Reduced-Order Modeling of Convective Heat Transfer in Porous Media

Carlo Fiorina

This work presents a data-driven Reduced-Order Model (ROM) for parametric convective heat transfer problems in porous media. The intrusive Proper Orthogonal Decomposition aided Reduced-Basis (POD-RB) technique is employed to reduce the porous medium formul ...

Temporal and spatial evolution of cavitating bubbles and coherent structures in a confined submerged jet shear layer

Sebastián Camilo Leguizamón Sarmiento

Purpose The study aims to display the bubbles' evolution in the shear layer and their relationship with the pressure fluctuations. Furthermore, the coherent structures of the first six modes are extracted, in order to provide insight into their temporal an ...

Invariant solutions underlying small- and large-scale structures in turbulent boundary layers

Sajjad Azimi

Flows of gases and liquids interacting with solid objects are often turbulent within a thin boundary layer. As energy dissipation and momentum transfer are dominated by the boundary layer dynamics, many engineering applications can benefit from an improved ...

Comparison of Reduced-Basis techniques for the model order reduction of parametric incompressible fluid flows

Carlo Fiorina

The applicability of two Reduced-Basis techniques to parametric laminar and turbulent incompressible fluid flow problems in nuclear engineering is studied in this work. The Reduced-Basis methods are used to generate Reduced-Order Models (ROMs) that can acc ...

Self-similar invariant solution in the near-wall region of a turbulent boundary layer at asymptotically high Reynolds numbers

Tobias Schneider, Sajjad Azimi

At sufficiently high Reynolds numbers, shear-flow turbulence close to a wall acquires universal properties. When length and velocity are rescaled by appropriate characteristic scales of the turbulent flow and thereby measured in inner units, the statistica ...

Modeling turbulent stream flows over rough permeable beds

Christophe Ancey, Ivan Pascal, Gauthier Paul Daniel Marie Rousseau

In steep streams, turbulent flows run over coarse sediments that are similar in size to flow depth. Under these conditions, a significant part of the flow may seep through the permeable bed. Based on experimental data, this paper presents a model able to r ...

Optimal spanwise-periodic control for recirculation length in a backward-facing step flow

François Gallaire, Edouard Boujo, Eunok Yim, Isha Shukla

Three-dimensional control is considered in the flow past a backward-facing step (BFS). The BFS flow at Reynolds number Re = 500 (defined with the step height and the maximum inlet velocity) is two-dimensional and linearly stable but increasingly receptive ...

Investigation of turbulent transport regimes in the tokamak edge by using two-fluid simulations

Paolo Ricci, Maurizio Giacomin

The results of flux-driven, two-fluid simulations in single-null configurations are used to investigate the processes determining the turbulent transport in the tokamak edge. Three turbulent transport regimes are identified: (i) a developed transport regim ...

Scanning PIV of turbulent flows over and through rough porous beds using refractive index matching

Christophe Ancey, Gauthier Paul Daniel Marie Rousseau

This paper presents image velocimetry measurements on turbulent flows adjacent to a permeable bed made of randomly packed glass particles. For measuring flow velocities inside the bed, the refractive index of the glass particles was matched with that of th ...

Invariant states in inclined layer convection. Part 1. Temporal transitions along dynamical connections between invariant states

Tobias Schneider, Florian Reetz

Thermal convection in an inclined layer between two parallel walls kept at different fixed temperatures is studied for fixed Prandtl number . Depending on the angle of inclination and the imposed temperature difference, the flow exhibits a large variety of ...

Turbulent patterns in wall-bounded shear flows: invariant solutions and their bifurcations

Florian Reetz

When laminar shear flows in large wall-bounded domains transition to turbulence, the flow exhibits spatio-temporally chaotic dynamics. Despite its chaotic dynamics, the flow may self-organize into characteristic spatially periodic patterns of unknown origi ...

Turbulent Flows over Rough Permeable Beds in Mountain Rivers: Experimental Insights and Modeling

Gauthier Paul Daniel Marie Rousseau

Steep mountain streams exhibit shallow waters with roughness elements such as stones and pebbles that are comparable in size to flow depth. Owing to the difficulty in measuring fluid velocities at the interface, i.e., from the rough permeable bed to the fr ...

On Von Karman Modeling For Turbulent Flow Near A Wall

Jacques Rappaz, Jonathan Rochat

Mixing-length models are often used by engineers in order to take into account turbulence phenomena in a flow. This kind of model is obtained by adding a turbulent viscosity to the laminar one in Navier-Stokes equations. When the flow is confined between t ...
