SPEEDING UP KRYLOV SUBSPACE METHODS FOR COMPUTING f(A)b VIA RANDOMIZATION

This work is concerned with the computation of the action of a matrix function f(A), such as the matrix exponential or the matrix square root, on a vector b. For a general matrix A, this can be done by computing the compression of A onto a suitable Krylov ...

RANDOMIZED JOINT DIAGONALIZATION OF SYMMETRIC

Daniel Kressner, Haoze He

Given a family of nearly commuting symmetric matrices, we consider the task of computing an orthogonal matrix that nearly diagonalizes every matrix in the family. In this paper, we propose and analyze randomized joint diagonalization (RJD) for performing t ...

Randomized flexible GMRES with deflated restarting

Laura Grigori

For a high-dimensional problem, a randomized Gram-Schmidt (RGS) algorithm is beneficial in terms of both computational cost and numerical stability. We apply this dimension reduction technique by random sketching to Krylov subspace methods, e.g., to the ge ...

Spectral Estimators for High-Dimensional Matrix Inference

Farzad Pourkamali

A key challenge across many disciplines is to extract meaningful information from data which is often obscured by noise. These datasets are typically represented as large matrices. Given the current trend of ever-increasing data volumes, with datasets grow ...

Unified Harmonic Power-Flow and Stability Analysis of Power Grids with Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources

Johanna Kristin Maria Becker

Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

The time-domain Cartesian multipole expansion of electromagnetic fields

Farhad Rachidi-Haeri, Nicolas Mora Parra, Elias Per Joachim Le Boudec

Time-domain solutions of Maxwell’s equations in homogeneous and isotropic media are paramount to studying transient or broadband phenomena. However, analytical solutions are generally unavailable for practical applications, while numerical solutions are co ...

From low-rank retractions to dynamical low-rank approximation and back

Daniel Kressner

In algorithms for solving optimization problems constrained to a smooth manifold, retractions are a well-established tool to ensure that the iterates stay on the manifold. More recently, it has been demonstrated that retractions are a useful concept for ot ...

Pseudo-Three-Dimensional Analytical Model of Linear Induction Motors for High-Speed Applications

Mario Paolone, André Hodder, Simone Rametti, Lucien André Félicien Pierrejean

Literature on linear induction motors (LIMs) has proposed several approaches to model the behavior of such devices for different applications. In terms of accuracy and fidelity, field analysis-based models are the most relevant. Closed-form or numerical so ...

COMMUNICATION LOWER BOUNDS AND OPTIMAL ALGORITHMS FOR MULTIPLE TENSOR-TIMES-MATRIX COMPUTATION

Laura Grigori

Multiple tensor-times-matrix (Multi-TTM) is a key computation in algorithms for computing and operating with the Tucker tensor decomposition, which is frequently used in multidimensional data analysis. We establish communication lower bounds that determine ...

The Power of Two Matrices in Spectral Algorithms for Community Recovery

Colin Peter Sandon

Spectral algorithms are some of the main tools in optimization and inference problems on graphs. Typically, the graph is encoded as a matrix and eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the matrix are then used to solve the given graph problem. Spectral algorithms ...
