Despite more than thirty-five years of research on wearable technologies to assist the upper-limb and a multitude of promising preliminary results, the goal of restoring pre-impairment quality of life of people with physical disabilities has not been fully ...

Gait analysis has traditionally been carried out in a laboratory environment using expensive equipment, but, recently, reliable, affordable, and wearable sensors have enabled integration into clinical applications as well as use during activities of daily ...

Sight restoration through retinal prostheses was still a mere dream a century ago. Current challenges are even greater: providing a quantitatively and qualitatively useful artificial vision to late blind patients. Existing approaches all face engineering a ...

In a progressively aging population, it is of utmost importance to develop reliable, non-invasive, and cost-effective tools to estimate biomarkers that can be indicative of cardiovascular risk. Clinical parameters directly measured in the heart or the aort ...

Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of a glaucoma procedure to control intraocular pressure (IOP) using the adjustable eyeWatch glaucoma drainage device compared with Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) in refractory glaucoma. Patients and Methods: Monocentr ...

The technological evolution in materials science and microengineering favored the production of advanced visual prostheses useful for fighting blindness and to improve patients quality of life. Visual prostheses aim at replacing lost visual functions by ar ...

Like 17 million people worldwide, an individual with cerebral palsy (CP) does not have the opportunity to walk harmoniously in society due to long-life impairments in movement and posture. The natural course of CP can be modulated by treatments and therapi ...

Despite the huge expansion in recent years of sweat sensing and wearable technologies, several challenges are still open, including poor sample collection, separate sampling and analysis, low multi-sensing capabilities and materials toxicity. In this work, ...

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) form a group of diverse disorders that lead to the degeneration of the light-sensing cells of the retina: the photoreceptors. IRDs are among the leading causes of blindness in working-age adults living in industrialized co ...

Precis: In this study, we report clinical results after implantation of an adjustable glaucoma drainage device. The intraocular pressure (IOP) profile was efficiently controlled postoperatively as the resistance to aqueous humor outflow was finely adjusted ...

Wearable sweat sensing systems offer non-invasive and real-time bio-data streaming solutions. They open the possibility for continuous monitoring of biomarkers' concentrations as well as their variation in sweat, which is a complementary to current passive ...

IntroductionRadiosurgery (RS) and fractionated radiotherapy (FRT) are part of the therapeutic armamentarium for the management of cavernous sinus meningiomas. We propose a systematic review of the local tumor control and clinical outcomes after monofractio ...

Retinal prostheses have been developed to fight blindness in people affected by outer retinal layer dystrophies. To date, few hundred patients have received a retinal implant. Inspired by intraocular lenses, we have designed a foldable and photovoltaic wid ...

Low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) in humans, encompassing transcranial direct current (tDCS), transcutaneous spinal Direct Current Stimulation (tsDCS), transcranial alternating current (tACS), and transcranial random noise (tRNS) stim ...

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) compared with classic nonpenetrating deep sclerectomy (NPDS) with implant in medically uncontrolled glaucoma patients. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent primary ...

Glaucoma is an irreversible disease affecting the eye, leading to progressive loss of vision and eventually to total blindness. It is often related to high intraocular pressure (IOP), which results from increased outflow resistance to aqueous humor. The fi ...

Cellular signaling mediated by Notch receptors results in coordinated regulation of cell growth, survival and differentiation. In melanocytes, Notch signaling is essential for the maintenance of melanocytes and the melanocyte stem cell population. Whereas, ...

A non-obtrusive portable device, wearable from infancy through adulthood, mounted with i) a set of two or more optical device(s) providing visual and audio information as perceived by the user ii) an actuated mirror or optical device returning visual infor ...

Despite the experience gained over several decades in various types of light-based medical treatments, the optimization of the corresponding therapeutic protocols and accurate forecasting of their outcome have not yet been achieved in many cases. The diffi ...

Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is the leading cause and the hallmark of Glaucoma, an asymptomatic and irreversible degenerative disease that, undetected or untreated, progresses to blindness due to optic nerve atrophy. Glaucoma is the second cause of ...
