In this paper, we introduce a new solution and underlying architecture that allows remote participants to interact with hosts in a broadcast scenario. To achieve this, background extraction is first applied to video received from remote participants to ext ...

Deployable emergency communication systems are a backbone solution for replacing damaged network infrastructures and/or providing high-end services in case of an emergency event. It is important that such systems are up-to-date with the latest mobile netwo ...

Increased use of solar collectors in buildings is necessary but poses major challenges in existing built environ ments, especially where architectural quality is an issue. The large size of solar systems at the building scale requires careful planning, as ...

In the context of wearable medical systems, resources are scarce while performance requirements are high. Traditional sampling strategies create large amounts of data, which hinders the device's battery lifetime. However, energy savings are possible when r ...

The emergence of video streaming applications, together with the users’ demand for high-resolution contents, has led to the development of new video coding standards, such as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). HEVC provides high efficiency at the cost of ...

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV extended Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS-IV/eBOSS) will observe 195 000 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to measure the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) standard ruler at redshift 0.9. To test different ELG s ...

This paper presents a design methodology for common-mode (CM) stability of operational transconductance amplifier (OTA)-based gyrators. The topology of gm−C active inductors is briefly reviewed. Subsequently, a comprehensive mathematical analysis on the CM s ...

Self-Reconfigurable Modular Robots (SRMRs) are assemblies of autonomous robotic units, referred to as modules, joined together using active connection mechanisms. By changing the connectivity of these modules, SRMRs are able to deliberately change their ow ...

This paper looks at the challenges that the Kamusi Project faces for acquiring open lexical data for less-resourced languages (LRLs), of a range, depth, and quality that can be useful within Human Language Technology (HLT). These challenges include accessi ...

Recent developments in information and communication technologies have been profound and life-changing. Most people are now equipped with smart phones with high computation power and communication capabilities. These devices can efficiently run multiple so ...

Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is referred to as a multimedia streaming standard to deliver high quality multimedia content over the Internet using conventional HTTP Web servers. As a fundamental feature, it enables automatic switching of qual ...

[Context and motivation] Service Management has been steadily gaining in importance in many organizations and is becoming a major force of change in IT departments. ITIL, one of the main service management frameworks, defines the value of a service for its ...

In this paper, an oscillator based on a Vibrating Body Field Effect Transistor (VB-FET) working at 9.4MHz is presented. The electrical characteristics of this active MEM resonator are detailed for static and dynamic operation. The benefit of the intrinsic ...

Most civil structures are passive and static. They are designed according to serviceability and safety requirements. When subjected to actions, they generally deflect in a passive manner. For example, they do not adapt actively to external loading. A more ...
