As a universal expression of human creativity, music is capable of conveying great subtlety and complexity. Crucially, this complexity is not encoded in the score or in the sounds, but is rather construed in the mind of the listener in the form of nuanced ...

This dissertation on data-driven music theory is centered around curatorial practices concerning the creation, publication, and evaluation of large, expert-annotated symbolic datasets. With its primary interest in the harmony of European tonal music from i ...

Diachronic stylistic changes in music are to a large extent affected by composers' different choices, for example regarding the usage of tones, intervals, and harmonies. Analyzing the tonal content of pieces of music and observing them over time is thus in ...

Geometric properties of lattice quantum gravity in two dimensions are studied numerically via Monte Carlo on Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations. A new computational method is proposed to simulate gravity coupled with fermions, which allows the study of int ...

Modern integrated circuits are tiny yet incredibly complex technological artifacts, composed of millions and billions of individual structures working in unison. Managing their complexity and facilitating their design drove part of the co-evolution of mode ...

The aim of this work is to study homogeneous stable solutions to the thin (or fractional) one -phase free boundary problem. The problem of classifying stable (or minimal) homogeneous solutions in dimensions n >= 3 is completely open. In this context, axial ...

Genome-wide chromatin conformation capture assays provide formidable insights into the spatial organization of genomes. However, due to the complexity of the data structure, their integration in multi-omics workflows remains challenging. We present data st ...

Music can be interpreted by attributing syntactic relationships to sequential musical events, and, computationally, such musical interpretation represents an analogous combinatorial task to syntactic processing in language. While this perspective has been ...

The human ability to perceive and understand music is remarkable. From an unstructured stream of acoustic input it creates a wide range of experiences, from psycho-acoustic effects to emotional and aesthetic responses. One such set of phenomena is the expe ...

In comparison to computational linguistics, with its abundance of natural-language datasets, corpora of music analyses are rather fewer and generally smaller. This is partly due to difficulties inherent to the encoding of music analyses, whose multimodal r ...

Claude Debussy’s personal style is typically characterised as a departure from earlier diatonic tonality, including a greater variety of pitch-class materials organised in fragmented yet coherent compositions. Exploiting the music-theoretical interpretabil ...

This paper provides a non-Anglo-American geographical discussion of digitally mediated cultural activities. Taking China's live music industry as an entry point, we seek to theoretically and empirically understand the complex roles of digital technologies ...

Objective. Syntax involves complex neurobiological mechanisms, which are difficult to disentangle for multiple reasons. Using a protocol able to separate syntactic information from sound information we investigated the neural causal connections evoked by t ...

The aim of this paper is to argue that complementation is an operation similarly fundamental to music theory as transposition and inversion. We focus on studying the chromatic complement mapping that translates diatonic seventh chords into 8-note scales wh ...

Natural language processing has experienced significant improvements with the development of Transformer-based models, which employ self-attention mechanism and pre-training strategies. However, these models still present several obstacles. A notable issue ...

Recently, substantial progress has been made in the understanding of microresonators frequency combs based on dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs). However, most of the studies have focused on the single-resonator level. Coupled resonator systems can open new ...

This thesis is a study of the global well-posedness of the Cauchy problems for half-wave maps from the Minkowski space of dimension n+1 to the 2-dimensional sphere and the hyperbolic plane. The work is mainly based on the results from Krieger-Sire 17' in ...

Introduced to enable a wider use of Earth Observation images using natural language, Remote Sensing Visual Question Answering (RSVQA) remains a challenging task, in particular for questions related to counting. To address this specific challenge, we propos ...

We present a dataset of 264 annotated piano pieces of nine composers, composed in the long 19th century (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7483349). Annotations adhere to the DCML harmony annotation standard and include Roman numerals, phrase boundaries, and ...

Entanglement and correlation are at the basis of quantummechanicsand have been used in optics to create a framework for "ghostimaging". We propose that a similar scheme can be used in anelectron microscope to exploit the correlation of electrons with theco ...
